i've been wondering this for a while... and no one seems to know. So, i thought i'd ask here. Why is it that Tomatoes are technically fruits but ketchup is legally a vagatable? bush sr. legalized katchup at a vagatable... but tomatoes are fruit... i guess it's just because he's an idiot, that's all i can think of. anyone else?

I still think of tomatos as vegetables. It may technically be a fruit, but oh well...it tastes like a vegatable. Ketchup? It's neither fruit nor vegatble. It's what happens when tomatoes start to rot, and get smushed up, turned to paste and mixed with water.

Correction: I believe Ronald Reagan was the one who deemed ketchup as a vegetable, because he infamous tried to have ketchup claimed as a vegetable in the American public school foodservice laws.
Anyway, tomato is technically a fruit because its seeds are produced on the inside and germinate upon decay of the actual fruit (food). Ketchup shouldn't, IMO, be even classified as produce. It's not produced from nature by natural means (ie. ketchup just doesn't grow), it's really a condiment.

Condiments are the spice of life.
Shannerz... Ketchup isn't a vegetable or a fruit. It's man-made. So... therefore it cannot fit those categories. I love you though.
