Colleges...and the discussion of them
How many of you are college-bound next year? In college now? Graduated from college?
I've been accepted to Indiana (B) and Purdue (WL). I'm still waiting to hear back from my out-of-state universities.
My friend (registered as JL143) insists that I go to Purdue.
I must make up my mind in mid-April.
And, if you're in college or have graduated from college, got any experiences to share?

If you think the "chick potential" at Purdue is low, I'd like to invite you to tour Rose-Hulman some time. Awesome school, not too many people of the female variety...
But then, I can't let you go to Purdue either. After all, friends don't let friends go to Purdue.

If you find this funny, you're a nerd.
If neither of the above apply, you are normal. Congratulations.

Actually I think the girl to guy ratio at Purdue is pretty good from what I remember.BladeFist87 wrote:my friend just got back from there and said the chick potential is pretty low...so that might be a part of it for you too...
West Lafayette is fun if you know where to find it, or so I've been told.
I'll be up there next year, majoring in Computer Graphics Tech. at Purdue.
Can't fucking wait.

I went to Purdue for one year, IUPUI as a part time student for three, and I've been at IU Bloomington for the past three years and graduate in May. Purdue sucked ass, IUPUI was good for what it was but didn't offer the programs I wanted, and I really dig IUB. Your mileage may vary.

I'm a mere freshman, but so far IUB is a pretty happening place. The classes and professors I've had have been pretty good, but they've mostly been in the East Asian Languages and Cultures department. But hey, if you have an interest in EALC, the fact still stands that IUB is pretty awesome. =)
Aside from school, Bloomington is a pretty lively town. There're many places to kill time around town, many parties at many places every weekend, and there's a staggering overabundance of attractive young women. Not that, you know, it particularly affects me since I have no chance with any of them, but others may have it differently.

Coming at you LIVE from a computer lab on the second floor of Stanley Coulter on Purdue's West Lafayette campus it's LIKE-A-BLE ROOODEEEENNT.
I'm currently taking a break from working on a project that I started a few hours ago and is due tomorrow, so I'll write a little bit up on Purdue, as it's been mentioned a couple times in this thread.
I'm currently in my fourth semester here and on my fourth major. First things first, while I don't really have experiences with other colleges pretty much the only reason to come here is if you plan on being an engineer or going into some other tech-related field. Also, don't come here looking for women, though then again you do have your exceptions, but they're few and far between. The gender make-up of the campus is about 60% male and 40% female, and many of those females don't count anyway.
Purdue does have one of the largest greek systems in the country and the alcohol flows, if you gravitate towards that stuff (which I don't really). Most of my socializing usually consists of a movie with friends or our weekly big DDR get together anyway.
Campus itself is nice, especially if you enjoy red brick buildings. It's fun to go screw around in the fountains on campus during warmer weather, and during the snow we have Slayter Hill to go sledding on. Last year the MTV campus invasion tour stopped by and put on an outdoor concert for free featuring Hoobastank and some other bands I don't remember, so that was cool.
I like it here and plan on staying here over the summer for the hell of it, mainly because I don't want to have to live with my parents for 3.5 months during the summer.
My mind is bleh right now, so I can't think of too much else. If you really want to know more just ask.
Right now all I want is spriiiiiiing breeeeaaak.

I applied to IUB, Furman, Univ. of Chicago, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, Univ. of Toronto, and the Toronto Conservatory and got into all of them.
Wow, that sounds real haughty. But it wasn't supposed to be. Anyway.
IUB gave me a big ass music scholarship because I play the violin well. That's why I went here, it was away from home but not like exorbitantly far, and I basically have to pay nothing. But I'm not majoring in music. I got out of it and still kept my scholarships. Anyway, I like IUB. It's a good school and I like where I live and everyone's cool.
So yeah, that's my story, I'm through.

Well I am just 12 weeks away from putting a cap on my Rose-Hulman career as a chemical engineering student. I must say that my 4 years at Rose have had the ups and downs and I'll give a break down of the goods and bads.
First off, if you aren't interested in an engineering degree, don't bother coming to Rose. It's way too expensive to do anything else. But if you do want to do engineering, it is the best you can find in the midwest for an undergrad engineering degree.
The very best thing about Rose is it's small size and excellent faculty to student ratio. Every single prof I've had at Rose knows my name and always will stop to chat in the hallway. Every prof I have for class is almost always available for help outside of class. Some will even give students their home numbers or be willing to answer emails from home long after they have left campus.
Historically the job placement of seniors has been very good. Usually around 97% of seniors would have job offers or grad school acceptances by graduation. That has changed a bit given the economy fluctuations and it also varies a bit with your major. Civil Engineers have the best market but the lowest starting salary.
Speaking of salary, that is another perk of engineering. Average starting salary for a chemical engineer leaving Rose is around $57,000.
The campus is gorgeous and is outside of the smell radius of Terre Haute. It's small so the farthest possible walk on campus is still under 10 minutes.
The downsides to Rose include the cost. Estimated cost of living and tuition for a year is nearing $40,000 per year. However, Rose is very good with the financial aid when you need it.
As Brandon mentioned earlier, the guy to girl ratio is around 5 to 1. Sucks for the guys but the girls don't seem to mind. Most the girls there are really nice but of course Rose has its share of bitches.
Some see Rose's small size as a downer because you tend to know just about everyone before too long. Some say it's more like a glorified high school (only with very very challenging courses).
The greek system is pretty small but they definately know how to party. One of our parties that was busted was so big, they talked about it on the Bob and Tom show the next day. I see the excessive partying more as a downside, but most would like it.
Sports at rose aren't taken very seriously. C'mon we're D3. The upside to that is you can play a sport you loved in high school without having to give up everything to be on the team. The coaches are understanding if your classes get in the way of practice. You're there to get the degree, not play. I wrestled there my freshman year but didn't continue because i had to work to much to pay the rent.
All in all, Rose has it's own flavor. The people here are unique and i've made some very close friends. It's a tough tough school, but you get a sense of pride when you survive in what is considered one of the fastest paced and most high tech engineering programs in the nation. I love Rose and given the chance to go back, I'd do it all again.

I've heard plenty of bad things about Purdue, enough to make me not even concider attending there. As for actual colleges and me are concerned, I'm currently not attending one. I'm on my schooling hiatus period, so to speak, hopefully working on finishing my damn book someday soon. If that doesn't work, I'll probably attend IPFW here in the fort, and probably have to transfer down to IUPUI for 2 years.

What bad things have you heard?
Also, I originally was going to start out at IPFW and live at home, but my parents wouldn't let me live at home so I just went to Purdue and lived on campus.
