Chise?
Well, typo aside, I usually just take images or gifs
of things I like and rework them avy size.
Other than that who knows.

This is a little odd... but my avatar is from the anime BECK which is currently airing in Japan. In the series, the guitarist for the band BECK, Ryuusuke, wears various orange t-shirts that feature different designs of this weird little rockin' guy.
As for how I got it... I made it. I took a screencap in one of the episodes where I got a clean straight-forward view of his t-shirt, cut out part of it, resized it, and touched up the image to make it.

I take a picture of myself and go "ooo" and then crop it to 100x100 and torture everyone by having it everywhere.

It depends. I usually try to have my avatar/sig match in some way. Currently, it's Heather from Silent Hill 3. As far as how I get them, I generally find images I want to use on the net and rework them in photoshop, resize, crop, whatever.

Mine almost always come to me on a whim. It could be an artist I've been listening to, or maybe I just decide hey
Mai Kuraki is flippin hot, I'll use her this week / month / until I feel like something else.
I use
the GIMP for all my image editing. It's not quite as powerful as Photoshop, and the interface is not even half as intuitive, but it's free and once I got used to it I can now perform most tasks at least as fast as I could in Photoshop. I can't really recommend it for a hardcore graphics designer or anything, but it does awesome for common tasks like resizing / cropping / colour adjustment / transcoding / etc..
