So I receive my Beatmania IIDX in the mail today. I go use my slide card and BLAM, the tray is stuck in not quite open, but not quite closed position. OK, no biggie, I'll just open 'er up and see what the deal is. So I fix it, and low and behold the power LED doesnt light, the fan in tha back doesn't turn on. I thinks to myself "crap, I must have disconnected that little silver ribbon thingy or sumthin." I look, nope. So does anyone have any experience with diagnosing a PS2 problem? I will gladly pay you cash money and some playing of the IIDX goodness. Please help me. I wanna play sooooo bad.

Ummmm I think its pretty much fucked. I've read that modding, can damage it beyond repair. You might be luckily and maybe some one can fix it.

When I read the topic, the Bob the Builder theme song played through my head. Ha!
Anyway, about your problem. I'm not much of a handyman guy with the innerworkings of expensive electronics, but I've heard from many people that slide cards really punish the motor in the PS2's DVD drive, which would make sense since you're forcing the tray open with that card. It might be possible that the problem could stem from there, but I'm not exactly sure what might've been damaged and how bad. But maybe that'll give you something to look into for the time being.

Look at any PS2, there is no visible wrongness here, just no powers.

Funny thing is I just fixed this last week, going in and setting the altitude of my optical lens.

Hey its not like it was availible when the PS2 first came out.
But still it would be nice, if sony made things that were easier to mod.

You do know that the entire point is to make it as difficult as possible to "mod" right? Sony has contracts that stipulate robust region coding (for licensing purposes), and they stand to make more money from people buying multiple PS2s (one for each region) with region coding. They make money, and you lose. They don't want you to be able to mod your PS2 (in fact, the likes of Sony have made even mods that only break region coding illegal in some countries.
Personally, if I'm going to do anything that involves voiding warranties (like a Fliptop), I figure I might as well go all the way and make it completley transparent and get a real mod chip. But then I'm very, very handy with a soldering iron (and a toaster oven...don't ask, or do).

Did you make sure to use the slide card to fully put the tray back into position? If you just push it back in it won't fully close. You have to use the slide card to lock it all the way in.

That's because Microsoft knows absolutely nothing about physical security of embedded systems. Of course, there's a fundamental issue here, and that's the whole issue of DRM (Digital Restrictions Management). See the
EFF for info on that, but I'll say that from a technical perspective it's a rather flawed concept (and of course I disagree with the principle too).

I fixed that problem, it's the power that is the problem.

Take one of those voltage meter things (the ones that light up when power is in a cord) and trace it from the power supply to whatever other wires you find.
