Some run IOS while others run CatOS. I'm not sure why one is necessarily better than the other for the purposes of Cisco's exams (they should test both, if they want it to be the vendor specific certification that it is). I do not know what the one I have laying around runs as I can't remember the model number, but I can tell you it's positively ancient (24x10Mb ports, 1x100Mb module, 1x155Mb ATM module).
A normality test:

If you are no longer connected to the internet, you need to apply more wax to your modem: it'll make it go faster.
If you find this funny, you're a nerd.
If neither of the above apply, you are normal. Congratulations.

Whatev I'll still take a look at it. Hopefully CatOS and IOS aren't wildly different.

So do hobos beat off? I imagine even though they are homeless and crazy that they still have everyday needs.

Does anyone else get frustrated by people that really like <thing that falls in a larger genre> but don't at all care for <everything else in said genre>?

Examples:

People really like DDR (because it is quirky and Japanese) but don't at all care for Pump it Up, ITG, IIDX, Pop'n, Guitar Hero, ect.

People really like Skrillex (because omg rager party) but don't at all care for any other dubstep or drum n bass artists.

People really like The Beatles (because they're absurdly popular) but only listen to top 40 otherwise.

People really like P.F. Chang's (because it's Chinese for white people) but won't go near any other ethnic restaurants.

I guess I'm not annoyed by their specific choice to like something but rather their reason for liking it. Anything popular solely because it's popular just feels too 'sheeple' for me. If you actually have a good reason for liking DDR over the other games, that's fine. If P.F. Chang's happens to make the best egg rolls, bully for them. If your reason is 'uhhh I dunno' then I'm going to assume you're just on the bandwagon. Are people just too lazy to do research into the things they enjoy? Do people just settle for comfort in what they're delivered and leave it at that?

This is the most hipster thing about me. I get so annoyed when people curtail themselves because they're afraid to explore, or worse... they just do whatever seems to be popular and will shape their preferences accordingly. I honestly believe many of the world's evils are a result of lazy people going with the majority without any thought behind it.

The contrary, hating the mainstream because it's mainstream, isn't any better.

Feel free to call me out on this one. I'd be ashamed to be a hypocrite.

Random:

1. This was hard to watch. I felt really embarrassed and wanted to stop.

2. That Triforce gamer dude is a bit delusional. Sure, he's good at high scoring on some video games, but he acts, posts, and poses for pictures like some bizarre A-list celebrity. I've always respected humility over attention-seeking behavior. He isn't a 'bad' person, and was very nice when we met in Iowa. Something about him just feels off...

Cisco originally made routers, and said routers ran on IOS. Once they got bigger they made some acquisitions to jumpstart their switching business, and as part of those acquisitions they acquired what came to be known as CatOS. IOS was Cisco-developed for their routers, while CatOS was originally developed by a different company for switches then brought under the Cisco name.

Cisco has since been trying to get rid of the CatOS legacy and made an end-of-life announcement for it a few years ago.

The commands between the two OSes are completely different. Cisco has already declared that CatOS is dead, so the cert tests completely ignore its existence.

As an aside, it should also be noted that IOS and iOS are also two different things. :)

You see, this is an example of how I don't actually know things and why I am just a piece of paper. Is there any way I can get my hands on a router for cheap or a router emulator or something? I don't want to have to shell out thousands of dollars for something that will probably not impact my salary or job prospects.

Speaking of which, I have an interview today at 1:00pm for a full-time job here at IU. I get more and more nervous and realize how unprepared I am as each minute passes by. I am going to die.

It ain't Cisco, but the Quagga suite runs on any old Linux box and has a rather IOS-like interface. It will manage the Linux routing table using all the common routing protocols. If your intent is to simply get experience with the major components of a largeish routing system, it should be fine, but it may not be of much use for passing the Cisco certs given how vendor specific those can get.

And don't forget that Cisco came out with the iPhone before Apple...

Meh, I'm just a piece of paper too... it's just that I have lots of free time at work to play with/study Cisco stuff.

For CCNA, personally I bought three 1721 routers, each with a WIC-2T card (to connect them to each other with serial connections) and two 2950 switches. I got them all from auction sites for a total of about $350, but Cisco gear tends to be more expensive in Japan than in the US, so you should probably be able to get them for cheaper. It's also a shame that you couldn't grab these off of Ho.

If you don't want to make that investment, Cisco also makes Packet Tracer, a network/IOS simulator that's more than sufficient for CCNA. Cisco doesn't make it available to members of the public, so you have to go and find it yourself.

And if you want access to IOS itself instead of just a simulator, GNS3 (which is a GUI for Dynamips) can emulate a few router models. However it takes more time to set up, you have to supply an IOS image, and it doesn't support Cisco switches.

I'd say that Packet Tracer is better for CCNA, and GNS3 is better for stuff above CCNA.

Hope you did well at your interview.

Oh yeah. I had forgotten about that until you just mentioned it.
