IPv6 has never done it, though it's still somewhat of a convenient convention to at least reserve the first address.
No I did not know that! I don't know shit about networking, I'm just trying to get a piece of paper by passing a test.
Oh, most of that stuff is mildly outdated and clings to somewhat (though not completely) obsolete practice.

It's certainly not inaccurate to claim that the first address in the allocation is the "network address", though it could be misleading. The address is usable, and people do use it, but it confuses some a lot of applications. After all, if you've only got a /30, and you burn the first and last as you "typically" would have for useless purposes (network placeholder and obsolete/archaic directed broadcast), you only get two usable addresses and waste half of them! IPv6 makes this much more explicit, but it's still common to reserve the first address just so that it's clearer in documentation when one is referring to "the network" vs. "a host on the network", and IPv6's address space is so huge that it's not a big deal.

The last address being used for directed broadcast is really kinda archaic. It's often still an OS default, and use of it for unicast is often avoided just to not confuse people, but it's usable. You just have to configure all the hosts to use something else (255.255.255.255 is common) for broadcast, which is generally done for "link local" broadcast, anyway. It's not worth the management hassle on larger allocations since it doesn't waste much (percentage wise), and you'll have more hosts to ensure proper configuration of, but on small allocations it makes sense. The rest of the Internet doesn't know or care. IPv6 does away with this entirely.

In practice, using these two address does seem to be a pain in the butt. I wouldn't necessarily recommend doing it, but it is possible (especially if you play some games with enlarging the allocation on one side of the router only).

Basically, if you're dealing with a /28 or bigger, people will usually stick to the old conventions just because rocking the boat can be such a hassle. However, for smaller stuff, people really want to use all the addresses they're paying good money for, so exceptions sometimes get made.
A normality test:
+++ATH
If you are no longer connected to the internet, you need to apply more wax to your modem: it'll make it go faster.
If you find this funny, you're a nerd.
If neither of the above apply, you are normal. Congratulations.

So a spambot made it to IndyDDR to tell a joke. I would like to share that joke with everyone.
A blonde, wanting to earn some money, decided to hire herself out as a handyman-type and started canvassing a wealthy neighborhood. She went to the front door of the first house and asked the owner if he had any jobs for her to do.

"Well, you can paint my porch. How much will you charge?"
The blonde said, "How about 50 dollars?" The man agreed and told her that the paint and ladders that she might need were in the garage. The man's wife, inside the house, heard the conversation and said to her husband, "Does she realize that the porch goes all the way around the house?"
The man replied, "She should. She was standing on the porch."

A short time later, the blonde came to the door to collect her money.
"You're finished already?" he asked. "Yes," the blonde answered, "and I had paint left over, so I gave it two coats. "Impressed, the man reached in his pocket for the $50. "And by the way," the blonde added, "that's not a Porch, it's a Ferrari."

You see that's funny because the blonde confused "Porsche" with "Porch" because she's a dumb bitch!

Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted.

Give us the child for eight years and it will be a Bolshevik forever.

Hey there IndyDDR,

Thanks for the help, the app is coming along and I’ve got a couple of functions working perfectly now. I’m trying to write a function to add a record into a SQL table but there’s a problem with the table schema that’s preventing it from working properly.

Right now, the tbl_TSSO_FW_Facilities table has the column FacilityID set as the Primary Key, Not Null, and as an INT. What I need it to do is be set as an IDENTITY column so that the FacilityID column auto-increments whenever a new record is added. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a way to do this without dropping/re-adding the table according to this:

http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2009/05/03 ... on-column/

Normally I’d follow these instructions and this wouldn’t be an issue, but the dev-sql server doesn’t allow changescripts to be generated. Since there wasn’t a whole lot of data in the table, I tried to manually drop and re-add the table but I can’t do that either now since the FacilityID column is a foreign key in a few tables. Any ideas on how I should resolve this?

I figured it out. SQL Server Management Studio had some bullshit option set where you could not run any queries that would drop a table.

Switched it off and now I'm breaking everything wooooo!! jkjkjkjk I'm writing a dumb inventory app please pay me $50k from now on.
