Do you have this set up in your room or at work?

Got a call yesterday from Lightbound, I think they now want me to come in for an interview. However a full-time position just opened up here at my office in Bloomington and I have pounced on that mugfug. I'm overqualified for that position and a good friend of mine is doing the hiring so I'm practically a shoe-in assuming I don't piss on his face during the interview.

What do I do if I get an offer from both places? I'm pretty sure the Bloomy job pays $31k and the Indy job pays $35k. The Bloomington job is likely to be significantly less stress but the opportunity for advancement is minimal at best. Indy job would allow me to live with Chad, his/my arcade cabinets, and presumably help me break into future Networking gigs. Taking cost-of-living into consideration, both jobs and their benefits are going to effectively pay the same.

The reason everything still has a serial port is because it's SIMPLE. It's very easy to make it work (for the device) even if it's in some god-awful almost broken (nearly a brick) state.

Newer, high end network gear generally has two "console" ports: one is a standard serial port (on a DE-9 or RJ-45) and the other is Ethernet that will DHCP you a local address and allow unfettered access to the console via telnet. They of course also offer in-band telnet (or generally, these days, SSH is preferred and available) access to the console via a network interface (subnet, VLAN, etc.) of your choosing. Every once in a while you'll also see a USB device port on something. It's basically just a serial port internally hooked up to a little USB to serial converter. Given the lack of need for weird drivers (since, of all things, the USB guys never did a good job standardizing USB hosted RS-232 serial ports), I'd rather just have a plain RS-232 port. You can hook it up to a modem for "lights out" out-of-band access, too.

Boss called me in to his office this morning, my current job is getting axed. I need to get a new job by Feb 3rd!

Really hope this interview tomorrow goes well.

There's not a whole lot to it really, boss called me in and told me he had some bad news for me. My current position as his assistant is no longer workable into the budget and they've gone ahead and decided to cut it. He really emphasized that it's not a poor reflection on me and that he'd give me a great reference if need be. In all honesty I wasn't really mad or upset about it at all which gave him a bit of relief I think - I told him about tomorrow's interview and my application for the full-time position that opened up in this office and he was happy to hear it.

I guess resources are thin (probably not), maybe they realized I don't do a whole lot (probably true), either way this is an actual lay off as opposed to "we're not rehiring you" and "you're not a good fit, we're not firing you, you're just not a good fit." At the very least unemployment will be back in full swing so I won't have to move in with my mom or something.

They're going to keep me around until the 3rd so I have two weeks. If I get an offer somewhere they're perfectly fine with me just not coming in and starting immediately.

I regret to inform everyone that these forums are probably going to die now. I will be working the night shift so unless you all are insomniacs then I'm going to be making posts to myself.

It's been a great couple of years but really I was probably going to get banned anyway so maybe it's best that we all move on.
