Merk you should purchase that picture, blow it up, and print it out on the 3 foot by 9 foot plotter printer in the library at IU. Then hang it on the wall right when you walk in your apartment to remind you of the american dream every time you come home after a long day's work of checking internet forums and trying not to yell at old people.

Merk and I need "fatty" avatars or poster-ranking-image-thingies since we are both fatties.

I would also gladly accept a cute lil chocobo.

In terms of status graphics it would be great to have this with a label saying 'OF COURSE.'

I can't decide if last night's episode of Lost was good or bad.

I think it'll be one of those episodes that is really disappointing when you first watch it but after the series finale we'll come to appreciate it.

I don't watch the show or anything, but saw the one last night. Someone on cal forums posted this, so spoilers I guess...

Who is Jacob? Who is the Man in Black?

Jacob and the Man in Black are Egyptian Gods. Or rather, they are powerful beings who were the source of Egyptian mythology.
Jacob is Apep, once referred to as the deification of chaos.
Apep's (Jacob's) wife is Taweret, who was known as the Goddess of childbirth and fertility. Taweret has been featured in the show as the four-toed statue, but we are familiar with her in human form, as Ilana.
Apep's (Jacob's) enemy is Ra, aka the Man in Black, who was the upholder of order and truth. When in the form of the smoke monster, he has been seen weighing the souls of those he encounters, judging whether or not they deserve to live.
Thousands of years ago, Ra (the Man in Black) was worshipped. Sometime later, the balance of power changed.
Some of the Gods can take the form of animals, explaining why Egyptian mythology sometimes depicts them as having both human and animal characteristics. In animal form, Jacob has appeared as the bird that called out Hurley's name, as well as the horse that appeared to Kate.
Ra (the Man in Black) can take the form of anybody that has died on the island, but does not require continued use of their body to do so. This is a vital distinction, as it illustrates the importance of Christian Shephard, whose body disappeared from the coffin (whereas Locke's body did not).

What is the island?

The island is the first piece of land in the history of the world, stemming from the healing pool in The Temple. The hieroglyphs above the pool read: "The Primaeval Water's of Nun"
The primeval mound refers to the island, and as stated previously, Ra refers to the Man in Black. Every civilization comes into contact with the island somehow.

In short: The island houses the origin of all life.

Oh did you watch it with Meg? I wonder why you'd tune in to this episode if you don't watch the show.

Jacob / MiB were probably considered in fake Egyptian culture as the personification of those Gods but I doubt that will be explicitly stated on the show, we'll just have to make assumptions from all the Egyptian shit that is on the island. As far as the changing into animals go I doubt that's the case, there's been no evidence that Jacob can turn into shit and MiB has only turned into other people.

We still don't know shit about the island, we don't know shit about the spooky light cave other than it housed a smoke monster / turned people into smoke monsters. This is why we need more info. I think that MiB is dead but his soul was blended into the monster, so you have this weird half MiB / half smokey hybrid.

What upsets me with this episode was that the whole time the producers framed this episode as the show that would explain all the shit that's been going on between Jacob / MiB and instead we get their origin story. That's neat but it doesn't explain why the smoke monster wants to kill people / why smokey can't leave the island and Jacob can / why are only certain people candidates.

You see half the fun of Lost is speculating on all the vague bullshit that we get from episode to episode.

Shit.

Yeah actors are lazy these days, they started yesterday's episode in Latin but then switched to English about five minutes in.

But hey, in present day Lost MiB and Jacob have been on the island for a few thousand years so I'm sure they've picked up on a few languages in their time. It's a show about flying smoke monsters that can't go over water so there's gotta be some disbelief suspended.

Agreed, but they spoke English long before the language existed. Clearly gods.

Yes I know you're being a little smart aleck but I'm sure the characters were speaking English for the sake of the actors being lazy and the masses who watch the show not wanting to read subtitles the whole episode. Oftentimes inflection is critical to the dialogue of this show and when you take that away you can't be super vague like the writers love to do.

Lost has always gone out of the way to put meaning into fine details. Something so obviously lazy just feels cheap. The only explanation is that Riot's assumption is correct. English was spoken by gods way back when before it was shared with man.

I don't watch the show and I never plan to.

Seems like it was one of those shows they didn't know was going to be popular or not so they didn't really plan it out to go on for as long as it has so now they're just making up random shit to keep people going "wtf mate?" and keep the sheep watching.

Why do I have a feeling that this may end with a Twin Peaks ending?

How's Annie? HOW'S ANNIE?
