AGP isn't necessarily dead but it would be quite unwise to stick with as it is quickly dying out. PCI Express 2.0 is the new big deal, and all the new, good graphics cards are going to be PCIe x16. The best choice Merk could make here would be to build or buy a new system that supports PCIe x16 if he has any hope of playing the latest and greatest games on his PC.
