Actually, it's really easy. 3 4-bit counters (two cascaded to make an 8-bit, and one used for a divide by 2 frequency scaler) clocked on hsync and reset by vsync driving an 8-bit DAC do handle vertical positioning. A single transistor and 3 resistors forms an inverting video amp which is fed the green signal and hooked up to the Z-axis input on the back of the scope. Then you set the scope up to trigger on the hsync/2 and trace the output of the DAC. Adjust the horizontal timebase until the width is right and the vertical sensitivity until the height is right, and you have a raster scan monitor from a scope with a minimum of external components. With a 10-bit DAC, I could handle full NTSC or PC modes up to 1280x1024 (though the resolution on the scope is NOT that high!).

The ones at Rose play a very, very good game of asteroids. They're Agilent (HP) scopes; Tektronix is more famous for pong or breakout.

My scope is an old analog scope, so there's no computer available to play games on without hooking up something external.
