But if the music blew your nuts, wouldn't that be an enjoyable experience?

Hmm?

It cracks me up when people say some kind of music they're not into "isn't music". I have heard various people refer to rap, rock, metal, pop, jazz, and even opera as 'not music' over the years, which leaves me at a loss as to what music actually is. :P

Its just as trendy to hate rap music as it is to like it. Debating about rap music is pointless, because the people who hate it won't listen to the people who like it, and vice versa.

Anyways, I can't wait for Tha Carter III to come out. Lil Wayne is amazing.

I disagree; it's nice to hear other people's opinions in both support of it or against it. It's less of a debate as much as a cry for a point in the right direction of something better to listen to.

Sure, music is art, and as such is purely speculative and depends on the listener. I see popular rap music as that kind of art where people make money for throwing up on a canvas, though. No talent, no thought, disgusting outcome, high income. And now I will indeed listen to other opinions.

People needn't run away from a topic that has various opinions: if I wanted everyone to agree on something I'd make one called "Shit smells like shit after Taco Bell!"

What, a drum beat? Check the myspace in my sig. The drums in witchfire are all synthetic. When we record, we typically program the beats, because we don't currently have the resources to mic our drum kit.

And yes, I'm aware that underground rap artists have little to work with...but what I hear on the radio isn't underground, it's mainstream. It's produced in a fancy studio, with engineers who know the equipment and the industry inside and out. They have the resources to do amazing things with their music...but don't.
I'm not just bitching about rap, mainstream music in pretty much every genre runs across the same problem. Someone stumbles across something new, and a few years down the road everyone is trying to replicate it.
It's as much a problem with the industry as a whole as it is with artists...record labels are buying up new artists left and right that fit the fad, while others may never get signed and get the publicity they deserve, because they're not exactly like the scene.
It cracks me up when people say some kind of music they're not into "isn't music". I have heard various people refer to rap, rock, metal, pop, jazz, and even opera as 'not music' over the years, which leaves me at a loss as to what music actually is.
The 'not music' argument pisses me off, regardless of the music in question. Music is entirely based on opinions...just because someone doesn't like it, doesn't mean it isn't music. Hence the reason I'm not saying popular rap isn't music...I'm just saying it's stale.
Hopefully the underground stuff catches on...I'd like to actually hear something new on the hip hop stations...after all, I have to listen to them all the time at work.

Original Sin wrote:I typically don't make generalizations when it comes to music genres, or 'mainstream' stuff. But here, I will.

Mainstream rap/hip-hop (stuff with frequent radio play) is more or less awful.
Now, older rap I can stand, as a lot of it makes me laugh. But the whole 'gangsta' fad can burn.
What makes me sad, is some of the artists I've heard DO have talent as vocalists, and their 'flow' is decent...if they'd just stop rapping about the same thing, using a made up language, and shitty back beats.

I'd like to see more instrumentation as well. As in...real instruments, played by real people. With talent. I know this does happen, but like has been said before...you have to wade through a deluge of shit to find it, and I'm not fond enough of hip hop to look for it.
I want to be pretentious too should I make a thread about every genre I dont like?
....and the same thing can actually be said about rock from a "ghetto" person's point of view. Many black people I know (excluding myself, since I listen to every thing except country for the most part) see rock as a bunch of loud ass white guys playing a damn guitar and singing about the same shit while banging their heads and screaming. Know, if you actually take the time to listen to it, some rap music is very good, but you can't get mad at them for makin music the way that they do because it is popular and it makes them money, because no matter what any rap, rock, pop artist says, mainstream music is about money, is has nothing to do with wanting to play music about things that are serious to you because if that was true you wouldn't try to get exposure, because just playing the music, even if it's just in a garage or something would be enough. All in all it just comes down to money, and you can't get mad at someone for doing something they know is both LEGAL and will make money, because if that is the case then you should quit your job right now.

---TO ORIGINAL SIN---
What problem do you have with the slang laguage used by rappers? It's pretty common for the black community in general, save for about >10% of us. It is just the language they use because it's the language they were raised on.
We've had so many threads about meaningless shit on this board, and you choose to bitch now? Fuck, we've got a thread about CATS.
I just love the way Dancing on Arrows make me feel, especially when I pass out from this song....
