Re: ummmmm Street Fighter IV anyone???
Chad watch these tutorials, they are helpful:
Very good tutorial about linking and how combos work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlLw_zG0 ... dded#at=47
Ryu useful combos video (very good video, and I don't THINK much has changed even though this is from SF4 vanilla): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0RS-iAEb94
Another REALLY good Ryu tutorial about spacing and zoning which is really important: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBUe7HkR ... re=related
here Merk new 360 controller has a good d-pad, if you only will use controller = http://kotaku.com/5626526/microsoft-rev ... e=true&s=i
also, not street fighter related, but Bangai-o sequel is coming out for 360!

I'm gonna guess the other 4 are going to be Alex, Rolento, Karin, and R. Mika.

Oh neat!
I wonder how / if Genei-Jin is going to work. I would totally not be surprised if they gimp the fuck out of the 3S characters because hey, they sure gimped the fuck out of Dudley/Makoto/Ibuki.
Well, maybe gimped isn't the right word, but transposing a character from a game with entirely different mechanics into SF4 has been awkward at best. Shoryukens still beat pretty much everything.

Re: ummmmm Street Fighter IV anyone???
I dunno, Ibuki is pretty good in SSF4. I saved a few crazy replays of people using her, and I think someone used her to place like top 4 in the last GodsGarden tournament (the biggest japanese tournament). She has tons of potential and I've seen people using her really effectively.
Dudree has a shoryuken just spam that. =P I don't see people using him as much anymore but he is still pretty good in the right hands. Same with Makoto; Justin Wong has picked her up to main lately to prove people wrong about saying she's one of the worst characters in the game.

Dudree's Shoryu does not have invincibility frames at the start-up of the animation - his reversal Shoryu will often trade or get stuffed whereas the Shoto Shoryu will beat literally everything outside of ultras and God help you if you think meatying your ultra is a good idea. That's pretty much the problem really, if the Shoto Shoryu was like Dudley's it might actually have a semblance of balance.

Dud's got the best overhead in the game, and never needs to jump. Let's do some tests tomorrow to see how good his shoryu really is.Merk wrote:Dudree's Shoryu does not have invincibility frames at the start-up of the animation - his reversal Shoryu will often trade or get stuffed whereas the Shoto Shoryu will beat literally everything outside of ultras and God help you if you think meatying your ultra is a good idea. In other news, Riot taught me some zoning 101. Fun stuff.

Hahaha, Chad how many times have you said that you were dumping Juri? Is it official now? Who are you picking up?

Just like in this picture, I'm focusing on Ryu. My goal is to work on zoning, spacing, and punishing combos. My fighting game fundamentals need work.

Re: ummmmm Street Fighter IV anyone???
Welp! You switched what is probably the best character in the game. Good job, good job.

Re: ummmmm Street Fighter IV anyone???
Ryu is a solid choice, and who cares that he is popular and easy to play? If you do good with him and you feel comfortable, that's what matters!
But yeah it's all about taking advantage of guaranteed damage situations... therefore, you need to get your bread n butter combos down to muscle memory so you are always ready to whip them out whenever the opponent whiffs something or leaves themselves exposed. For Ryu, the safest one is usually just a good ol' hard punch > hard shoryuken link when they whiff a shoryuken or something that leaves them open. Besides that, you need to get the basic blockstring down which is cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.mk, hadoken. If it hits, great, if it doesn't, you've done chip damage and pushed the opponent far enough away from you that you are now safe. Otherwise, one of the most important things to practice with Ryu and any character is a strong cross-up game; cross over with a medium kick as they wake up (get the timing right unless you want to whiff or eat a shoryu), then do your little blockstring, or if you hit and you have enough time for your mind to process that you're hitting them, try to combo into an EX tatsu... Like cr.lp, cr.lp, ex Tatsu or something. Those first two cr.lp's are used to hit confirm, or give you enough time for your mind to process if you're hitting the opponent to go into a damaging special move or if you need to just finish the blockstring to get a safe distance. Those cr.lps are really great tools to apply some pressure and give you enough time to see if you're getting hits in to progress into a damaging combo, or to finish the string and back off.
Also, as you can imagine, you need to practice the good ol' shoryu > FADC > ultra. Just go to training mode and practice it. Slow it down more than you think you need to; you don't need to spam it out so quickly that it's a big garbled mess. You might be surprised with how much time you have to put in precise movements. What I do when I FADC is move my grip almost completely off the joystick and just tap the stick forward with my stuck out pointer and middle finger. I always do this input for FADCs too: Forward > MP/MK > Forward... It's more consistent then if I try to actually do MP/MK > Forward > Forward. Try it out for yourself and just try to do it 20 times in a row or something out of a hadoken or something to get the muscle memory down.

p.s. Merk you said Makoto sucks, but this is JWong proving that wrong (grand finals of some tournament against Mike Ross): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qNCgHkX ... r_embedded she seems to have some potential... in the right hands anyways

Re: ummmmm Street Fighter IV anyone???
I'd really like to get away from him eventually. I think it is more fun to have 5 or 6 characters you can play, and 1 or 2 that you can play especially well.Riot wrote:Ryu is a solid choice, and who cares that he is popular and easy to play? Can you imagine only playing Akuma and sucking dickballs with everyone else?

Well the good thing about Ryu is he is relatively straightforward, so you can learn a LOT of the important basic fundamentals with him that will transfer well to other characters. I would imagine anyways, because who knows how skills transfer to other characters since I don't venture away from my comfort blanket character. I'd like to be good with Ibuki and Adon, and Ibuki is the only other character I slightly know how to play. There is still a long way to go with her if I'd ever want to win consistently though; I rely on that kunai wakeup vortex way too much and get punished really hard. Oh well, I like being good with one dude instead of being mediocre with 5 dudez. Even though lately I am super mediocre with my only 1 dude =(
