For some reason I want to play P4 first which I haven't. Sort of waiting for the Vita port.

I'm certainly interested in the story, but I'm more interested in the gameplay and competitive aspect. I'm definitely getting Persona 4 Golden for Vita when it comes out in October though.

I agree with you, but I feel like it's something I have to do for some reason or another.
Only game I've ever felt comfortable skipping was the first Assassin's Creed which I played for about 4 hours and dropped because it was god-awful.

Long but good video of some of the devs showing off the tricks of a lot of the characters (they give a pretty detailed breakdown of each character's tricks and gameplan) in the game and the basics of the game system:
