Rap Music, and the Discussion of It

Hah, I say nevermind to most of the lyrics too... I hate the recent inclusion of the goldfish rule which states that they have to repeat something every three seconds.
I actually listen to a small selection of japanese rap, that makes ignoring the lyrics even easier. Bands like Soul'd Out, Rip Slyme and YKZ make me happy.

Well, I tend to like the beats...just as much as I like any other song...I like having variety in the genres that I listen to. Rap is very much a part of what I like. Sometimes rap songs will sounds the same and they are boring, but other times, I will hear something and be like, "Wow, that sounds kinda new and interesting," Missy Elliott is usually good at that. I feel like she always comes up with some kind of phrase or something that I haven't heard of before, and I'm like, that sounds cool.
It's easy for me to block out lyrics. Rap really isn't the only genre that make inappropriate and offensive references to things. I feel that once you start caring about lyrics, then you apply it to other genres, and then you begin to just start hating music because of what they are saying. Maybe the message is bad, but music has never influenced me that way. If people want to write songs about bitches and hos, and what goes on at da Holidae Inn, then so be it. Free Speech. I prefer music because of how it makes me feel...what kind of mood it gets me in. I'm not going to be picky with the way an artist words something.

I don't really think its about the inappropriate and offensive references as much as it is the cocky ignorance of most maintstream rappers today. Not only are you dealing with mostly uneducated stuck-ups, but the songs' themes themselves dive headlong into pride, greed, violence, [insert more sinful acts here], which is a real turn-off to a lot of people. You can have all the great beats in the world, but I for one cannot enter this realm of lyrical escapism when a fucker is yelling for me to "lick some tits and eat my grits".blackcat wrote:Well, I tend to like the beats...just as much as I like any other song...I like having variety in the genres that I listen to. We had a foreign exchange student from Argentina last year, and we were asking him about what sorts of music he liked, etc. We had to ask in Spanish for class participation. Someone asked him if he listened to Mike Jones, he responded, "who?" Needless to say, the guy stood up and shouted, "don't act like you don't know!" The kid was clueless.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why other countries might hate America.

The only genre, of course not. But they're the one that does it the most bluntly, in simple, straight forward language that children understand, and then copy, and most disturbingly...implement those values into their life, inheriting the cocky, self centered attitudes of their favorite rap stars.
It's not bad if you don't take it seriously...but kids are often not that wise.
Yes, rock, and metal, and hell, even older music often times has a 'vulgar' message, but it's typically hidden with clever word play and double meanings. Classic rock, for example...usually about drugs, sex, and rock and roll. But they don't come out and say 'smack that ass!' and all this other shit. The way they use their lyrics, any educated adult can figure out what they're singing about, but younger kids who interpret things more literally, are less likely to get the 'message.'
And yeah, I'm a metal fan. Black metal, for example, often has dark religious themes and is often quite vulgar and...well, downright evil. But, this kind of music is not plastered all over the media, isn't played on MTV, etc. That aside, the lyrics are very hard to decipher unless you already know what they're saying. Besides, the odds of a kid just randomly hearing a black metal song, or hell, even something more mainstream like Slayer, are pretty slim. Metal (and I'm not talking about this new metal stuff) is typically out of the media. Stuff like Killswitch Engage and Shadows fall sound heavy...kinda...but they're not nearly as evil as they might sound.

Yeah, I know that rock and heavy metal music isn't quite as straightforward to their references of drugs and sex and whatever else. I pretty much like all genres of music except country. Fucking can't stand country music.
But as far as vulgar references go, in the lyrics of songs, there is a lot of emo/punk music about people that cut themselves or whatever, so I guess what I mean is that rap isn't really the only genre that influences people in certain ways. Music does not control my life, personally. I like to listen to music, but I don't go by their examples. So, I listen to rap, but do the lyrics influence me? No.
