Well, my objective is to go outside some time and try to talk via one of them (remember, I'm an amateur radio operator). Currently, Echo (
AO-51), which is the big FM repeater (so I can work it with my handheld) is in packet mode, though it will be in FM repeater mode tomorrow, but downlinking on 2.4GHz, which I don't have a receiver for. On the 17th, they'll put it in V/U mode, where it uplinks on 144MHz and downlinks on 440MHz, and that I can use.
I could go up to the club station and work the non-FM satellites since I can do sideband up there, but my antennas are quite non-optimal as they're made for terrestrial work (not that the rubber duck on my handheld is much better).
Too bad AO-40 is completely dead (it seems that you're supposed to remove those tags that say "Remove before flight" before putting the thing into space). There was a TON of bandspace on it, though it mostly downlinked on 2.4GHz (I can do 1.2, but not 2.4).
Yes, there are people who launch satellites as a hobby.
AMSAT has the info.

Do you use Dvorak? I've tried learning it multiple times but keep going back to Qwerty because I can't stand my slow dvorak typing and limping through the learning curve.

I am slowly painfully learning it, at this point I can use it for simple short notations in job descriptions or whatever, to make the point this message was typed using it, but I shifted back to QWERTY for
a recent, longer message (it's a link HINT HINT).
