Reminds me of the Die Hard Arcade game for some reason.
Man, that game was good.

They had it at the skating rink in Bloomington at least a long time ago.
It took years before I found out was. I play a lot of games on MAME so I probably would have stumbled upon it regardless.

I'm too lazy to really look into it myself, but I kind of want to know Japanese player's overall opinions of Sound Voltex. I usually forget it exists and point to Reflec Beat as the most recent Bemani game because for some reason Sound Voltex is mostly forgettable and nearly every remix in it is god-awful.
Any insight into that, LikeableRodent (or anyone else).

I have to agree cause I was interested in Sound Voltex until I heard the songs. I appreciate what they are trying to do, but they should have chosen some better artists.

The problem is the artists have made some very enjoyable songs in the past (at least for me), but it's almost unreal at how bad a job they're doing remixing the Bemani classics. You've got some amazing songs and I've heard amazing remixes of the songs before-hand, but what was presented from nearly every artist was disgusting. I have a strange feeling that the director set some odd requirements for the songs to fit the gameplay which is why we have ridiculous use of effectors and I think that the artists they selected simply don't know how to use the effectors properly in a song. They clearly selected the artists based on viral popularity in Japan, IOSYS, REDALiCE, and a clusterfuck of vocaloid artists, how do you not make headlines and a bazillion 2ch/futaba fanfag threads? But, then the game seems to have a very Western influence especially with gameplay that seems quite a bit similar to DJ Hero. It seems like they had the artists listen to dubstep and then tell them to turn their energetic, Japanese-styled electronic songs into something that resembles psuedo-Skrillex noise.
I just think it's kind of a slap in the face of how disconnected Konami is with their audience, especially since they appear to have no clear goals on even testing this game in NA. It just makes you wonder what they were trying to do while targeting so much at once. It fell so flat it wasn't even funny. I mean it doesn't seem as bad as Pop'n Wii, but you have to wonder what goes through the minds of the Bemani franchise managers sometimes.
I am curious if it's well received, though, 'cause it sounds like it ain't dead yet and if people care enough to AAA all the hard songs some people must like it.
Again, I like a lot of the artists they chose, but it seems like while they make some other game music amazing, they do such a major injustice to some of my favorite Bemani tunes I feel betrayed.
tl;dr: I'm unsure if it's the artists they selected or the direction the directors chose. There seemed to be such a heavy mix of genres and ideas that it all fell apart.
EDIT: Also, I think Doujin artists are cheap to license. Konami's goin' cheap on us.
