Actually, in all honesty, it tastes horrible. Interesting stuff though.
Is that that shit that's in the movie Alfie? I was sort of confused as to what exactly it was, please explain.

absynthe is a mixture of alcohol with wormwood. the active ingredient in wormwood is thujone. it makes you 'hallucinate' but to actually reach the hallucination stages of absynthe you have to drink it for a while. the wormwood builds up in your blood over time and makes the next time of usage more intense. thujone can poison your blood and many artists went insane/died from absynthe abuse in the 1800s. the stuff you can get today is nowhere near the same unless you get from 2 specific people in the world that won't sell to the usa.

ps: it tastes like gasoline

So, what exactly is wormwood? Is it a type of plant or something? Oh, and, lol, I've tasted gasoline before :P.

The thujone in Absinthe is toxic in large amounts, but the actual amount you can drink, before you get hopelessly intoxicated (mine is 150 proof) is relatively small. Also, it's theorized that the actual 'effects' of absinthe are caused by more than just the wormwood. It contains a large amount of herbs, many of them with different properties. The different herbs, plus the thujone, all make for an interesting feeling.
I drink it reguarly, but I've never flat out hallucinated. It does give you a good boost in creativity, though, as well as an interesting 'high' feeling much different than your regular alcohol buzz. Like I said...I've never hallucinated, but if I drink it reguarly, I'll start to look at things in the world differently, even when I'm not high on the stuff. Lights and shadows for example are fascinating. Spherical things, shiney things, eyes, colors...all completely fucking fascinating.

Like Sam said, though...it tastes pretty bad. Traditionally, you dilute it with water (1 part absinthe to 5 parts water) and mix it with sugar. But personally, I can't stand that. It tastes even worse watered down in my opinion.
However, I've had moderate success mixing it with green tea, though if you add too much to the tea it's horrible and a half.

If you're interested in Absinthe, I'd suggest you try 2 things.

Pernod is a relatively strong liquor related to absinthe. In fact, it's essentially the original recipe minus the wormwood, though it still contains the myriad of other herbs and will still give you a bit of the high feeling.
It can usually be found in liquor stores, 20-30 bucks a bottle.

Chartreuse is stronger than Pernod, and it's actually contents are a mystery. It has a unique, spicey taste, and is also made with herbs, including a small amount of wormwood. It's legal to buy anywhere, if you can find it. It comes in 3 varieties. Green chartreuse is 55% alcohol, Yellow Chartreuse is 45% and a bit milder. V.E.P chartreuse is aged green chartreuse, and is stronger. The former 2 will run you about 50 bucks per bottle, the later...I have no idea. I haven't found any yet!

Chartreuse also has some interesting effects, and it's legal, although expensive.
