I've only heard one thing about censorship of those games and it censored "blown off body parts" in MW2. I don't really think that would change any "effect" the game has.

Famitsu, their most popular gaming magazine has only given 34 games a score of 39/40 in it's entire time of conception and three of them are Call of Duty, one of them is Gears of War 3, and three of them are Rockstar Games (GTA IV, Read Dead: Redemption, LA Noire). I haven't really heard anything about censoring these games, but if you go onto Nico Video gaming streams you're bound to find at least 4 or so of the popular streams are playing these "violent" western games. They have a lot more of a presence than the credit you are giving them. I agree the culture does not match our eckbawkz cawwadoody mentality, but we cant completely discredit its possible effects overseas.

Also, even in the case of censorship, a PC savvy gamer in Japan would be very capable of getting the American or European versions of these games via Steam or otherwise off of the internet.

When I was 11 (1993) games like Mortal Kombat and Doom were considered murder simulators, and I was forbidden to go anywhere near them. Sure, I could sneak off to a friend's place and play for an evening, but my family made sure that any games I played at home were not overly violent. There's no reason anyone under 14 should be able to access the game without parental assistance.

Banning a pixel version of a gun to protect the real thing is asinine.

Guys, millions of kids play games all over the world. If games somehow made people want to go out and be a true doom murderhead then there would be a lot more 187s out there. I'm pulling this out of my ass but I'm going to guess that most of these shootings were commited by asocial aspies who are too retarded to be able to deal with their shortcomings in a socially acceptable way so they go all "impotent white person rage" and shoot up a strip mall or something.

They controlled for age and "previous aggressiveness." I see no controls in that study for socioeconomic conditions, race, psychological conditions, etc. Nearly all of their data is self-reported except for the US study which includes teacher and peer data. They make no mention of how they controlled for any selection bias.

A couple of the study authors have/had ties to the NIMF organization, notorious for "witch hunting" the video game industry. That study itself was funded in part by NIMF.

Calling a 4-6 month, 2-time survey a longitudinal study is a stretch as well. Study is weaksauce, brah.

I went into Spencers in the college mall a few times when I was younger and only recently did I notice how hypersexual everything was. I don't even remember seeing anything like it when I was a kid, but I apparently did. I just didn't notice it because I wasn't aware/looking for it. He's 5. He could have erased the photos, given him the "toy" back and called it a day.

Although, I don't really mind Gamestop getting some extra flak.
