I've heard that as well. In Salem in particular, wasn't it something to do with the rye/bread, or something similar being contaminated with that stuff? All the witch trials were bogus, you're right about that. Most paranormal incidents that reach any kind of media status are either a hoax, or not what they appear to be. If you're interested in real paranormal, follow up on urban legends. There's a couple around here I know of, and so far, they seem to be legit, though not really dangerous.
