^^ Literally do not remember making this post last night. For what it's worth I don't remember making my Facebook status either. Thank God I'm not embarrassingly malicious when I am shitfaced.

Why "Renting is throwing away money" is a myth

Before you say you're "throwing money away" on rent, think about the money you're "throwing away" when buying a house.

1) Looks like you're spending $5400 on closing costs, money down the drain.

2) PMI for not hvaing 20% equity, lets say $100 a month, down the drain.

3) Property taxes. Lets assume $2000 a year, down the drain.

4) Mortage interest. You're financing a staggering 97% of the house, you're going to end up paying, on a roughly $120K mortgage, $150K in interest payments, down the drain.

5) Maintenance. When you rent, the landlord is responsible if anything breaks...ever pay for a new roof? More money, down the drain.

In other words, the money you spend on rent is money you'll never see again. An overwhelming chunk of the money you spend on a house is money you'll never see again.

This idea that "renting is throwing away money" is a lie perpetrated by the real estate industry. Do some real research into buying a house if that's what you want to do; buying a house because "renting is throwing money away" is a great way of losing money in the short/long term.

Don't you hate it when you're having a conversation about something you're somewhat of an expert on and the other person has completely misguided notions about the subject but you don't want to call them out on it because you don't want to start an argument or seem like an asshole for correcting the other person?

Case in point, over the weekend I got into a discussion about the happenings to on-line poker. The other person said that on-line poker got shut down since Pokerstars and Full Tilt weren't paying taxes to the US government or some such nonsense. I really, really wanted to call him out on it but I couldn't find it in my heart so I just dumbly smiled and nodded. The other bloke didn't speak English very well so I find it's usually best to just be as accommodating as possible to these sorts of folks.

Happens to me all the time. I used to bother with correcting people but as I've gotten older, it's become clear how useless it typically is.

copypasteeeeee

Most of the time you don't pay closing cost, sellers do (and closing costs are more like 3k). Pretty sure you can write a lot of the property taxes off and there are bonuses for ownership on taxes. Basically, if you stay in a house for like 6-8+ years it usually becomes cheaper to own a house from most things I've read. AND I CAN MAKE A MEDIA ROOM AND PLAY LOUD GAMES IN MY NEW HOUSE ARE YOU READYYYYYYYYYYYY

This always happens with videogames. I know a lot about most games and trying to defend the game industry or trying to prove why something is good or bad to fanboys is impossible because they have these ingrained thoughts and haven't opened up their mind to other ideas. Trying to tell my mother in law that games are more than bleeps, bloops and pixels made for spastic 11 year olds is impossible. Trying to convince my friends that PS3 isn't the best system is nearly equally impossible.

Yeah I imagine with weight loss and lifting you get this a lot. There's an absolute fuckton of misinformation out there about dieting and exercise.
