Holy crap earthquake

I'm glad you're still alive.

The most violent, nude (and rude) awakening I've had lately was my cat sticking his tail in my mouth at 5:30 AM. Nothing like an earthquake, but still pretty unpleasant.

Yeah. Stupid thing had to strike at 11:30 at night while I was sleeping.

Thing is, it's not just how much the big quakes shake that's scary--it's that they're really frickin' loud. Usually, you'll hear a loud deep rumbling both somewhere and everywhere. A few seconds later everything starts shaking. And I mean everything starts shaking. And sometimes stuff starts falling.

So imagine the sound of everything everywhere violently shaking, and on top of it the earth beneath and surrounding you is screaming out in this really loud, deep rumble. Then imagine that you were nice and naked and comfortable under your comfy warm sheets and got woken up by all this.

And that was my night.

Imagine having the fire alarm go off at your building three times in one night when you have a fitness test at 6 am.

Pretty sure anybody who lived in Read dealt with that on a weekly basis. We were always going outside in the snow at 3am in our undies. Apparently it's like a tradition. It was no earthquake but out there in the snow sure was a girthquake.

Uh, I lived in dorms for three years at Purdue. One particular year someone had an affinity for setting trashcans on fire in the dorm, so I'm well-acquainted with dead-of-night fire alarm pulling, though I must say not the night before a fitness test.

I assume you mean a bed or a futon. Tatami is flooring, so hopefully you're not sleeping directly on the floor.
I sleep on a futon (a Japanese futon, not the American style).

You're supposed to lay out the futon before going to bed then fold everything up and put it in the closet in the morning. I'm lazy, so about 70% of the time I just leave mine out.

Traditionally, you use a futon in a washitsu (Japanese-style room) and a bed in a youshitsu (western-style room). Washitsu will have tatami mat flooring and sliding doors (either fusama, shouji, or both).

It's pretty rare to see anything but a futon used in a washitsu and anything but a bed used in a youshitsu.
