Define Hardest Stream !?

Post by BigBadOrc »

HrMrMrMrmmmMmmmmMm...

So I'm trying to write a program to find the hardest stream of a stepfile.

The problem is, I'm not quite sure how to define it. Like, I want to maximize it on two variables at once: notes per second, and seconds. So I guess I have to maximize some function of these two variables but I'm not really sure what it should be.

Something I should mention is that for such a program you would have to figure out something to consider crossovers as well. The best example is that Healing D-Vision Challenge has 360 bpm crossovers which are nothing short of a nightmare to do.

Crossovers is done:)

My step generator makes a pretty good 10 footer full of crossovers.

But that's a good point, a stream with crossovers or double steps is certainly harder than a straight stream.

So right now I'm thinking of making a sort of throughput bar graph.. I get the throughput (notes/sec) for 1 second intervals throughout the whole song and make a graph out of that. Then I find the minimum points and use them to separate different streams. Then I can evaluate which stream is hardest based on some criteria (num double steps, num crossovers, total seconds, average notes/sec). Probably something like (double steps + crossovers + seconds) * (notes/sec)

You talking about absolute BS songs that people make filled with notes? If you're looking for something more "realistic" and passable but still hard a lot of Bursurk Lurk's stepfiles have some tough streams.

uh very very fast steps inbetween jumps = much harder than fast cross over steps :/

steps in between jumps should probably be classified as double steps

My ultimate goal is to be able to estimate the difficulty of a song. For example, one more lovely is an 11... except I'd call it more of a 15. So if I could tell just by analyzing the notes how hard the song was, then I could just overwrite the difficulty number with my own estimated number.

So I need some criteria by which to compare the songs.. here's what I've got so far, which doesn't work as you note the examples in red:

explaining that... energizer has a slowdown which hurts its throughput.. and so deep is pretty constant the whole time.. and its double steps are far enough apart that they're not that big of a deal. And xuxa might be more of a 10 footer anyway. SO I think that judging a song by its hardest stream might be a better estimator than throughput.

The hardest stream is the one that flows away from the ocean and up the mountain.

I think when it comes to BPM, the difficulty increase isn't linear. The difference between 150 and 200 bpm is nothing compared to the difference of 350 and 400 (in terms of difficulty).

Just a thought.

Agreed, I find timing easier to do on 300-400bpm than I do 200-250bpm, to me 200-250 just feels weird and has always caused me accuracy issues. I'd personally say bell curve ;)

Actually that's the standard versions of max 300 and cartoon heros you're looking at, and both of those have a higher throughput than little kitty mine, which is rated higher. But it's obvious that konami was smoking some major weed when they rated MAX300 standard as an 8 cuz that shit is hard lol.

Re: Define Hardest Stream !?

So after tinkering with the idea of rating a song's difficulty based on things like overall throughput, trickiness, and hardest stream values, I've decided to try a different method.

I'd like to give each step in the song a difficulty value from 1 to 20, and then decide on the overall song's difficulty.

One of the problems I encountered earlier is that there are a lot of misrated songs in DDR and ITG. Songs like PSMO where you're like.. um.. that's WAY harder than MAX300 and they're both at the same difficulty? Or like MAX300 hard which is an 8 footer but harder than most 9 footers. So I'd like suggestions for songs that you know are rated correctly (or songs that aren't but you think would be perfect for a different difficulty). Here's my list so far:

1-8s
??

9s
exotic ethnic
AFRONOVA
Fly Away
Fly With Me
Funk Factory
Incognito
SO DEEP (PERFECT SPHERE REMIX)
stoic(EXTREME version)
Lemmings on the Run
cartoon heroes

10s
Anubis
fleadh
hillbillyhardcore
holy guacamole
MAX 300
MAXX UNLIMITED
Soapy Bubble
Tribal Style
Sunshine
Walking On Fire

11s
Xuxa
The Beginning
Destiny
Infection
July
monolith
speedway.dwi

12s
Energizer
tell
go 60 go
indulgence

13s
Pandemonium
summer

14s
ageha
Air
bluearmy
Quasar
September
uberrave

15s
vertexalpha
vertexbeta
