Nine Inch Nails, Trent Reznor is the greatest ever. With Teeth is coming out this year, and they're starting to announce tour dates, i'm so going to see them, or die trying.

Trent Reznor is a musical genius, and my musical idol. His music is never the same, and constantly changes styles. Very dynamic, very powerful, and very awe inspiring. If there's anyone out there who only associates NIN with 'closer' (I wanna fuck you like an animal), you should really check out some of their other stuff. Much much better.

Please people, don't call electronic music techno, it's not correct at all.
Techno is a subgenre, next to many many many other subgenres. It's a sin to not recognize the depth of electronic.

No one recognizes the different Genres of rock, so what does it matter to me? I know it's all classified as electronica, but I don't listen to it enough to really distinguish or care which genre it is, as I'm sure is the same case with you and my kind of music. Believe it or not, there are genres of rock, more than the few they play on the radio.

It's all music, and there's no way in hell I'm going to classify it all like the frickin' animal kingdom. You like it or you don't, that's the only thing that matters.

Yeah, people seem to go absolutely CRAZY with classifying electronic music. No other kind of music has so many sub-genres --- trance, techno, jungle, house, trip-hop, etc. etc. etc....

I like IDM quite a bit (Aphex Twin, Matmos, Mouse on Mars, Boards of Canada, Autechre, etc.) but to me it sounds quite a bit different than all the other sub-genres...

No one recognizes the different Genres of rock, so what does it matter to me? I know it's all classified as electronica, but I don't listen to it enough to really distinguish or care which genre it is, as I'm sure is the same case with you and my kind of music. I hope you're not assuming that I only listen to top40 rock. I never listen to the radio, never.

From the bands you like, I've noticed that most are radio bands, so don't assume I don't know genres. Alternative is a bad word, because every rock group nowadays is thrown into it.
I'm mainly into hxc, screamcore, straight edge, indie(used to be just independent, now apparently it's a genre), experimental(hodge podge of a lot of smaller genres) when it comes to rock. I also like grunge bands that I grew up in my younger days listening to, mainly Nirvana, Pearl Jam, NIN, AIC, STP. I also enjoy many classic rock(there used to be a lot of genres back then too, now we only recognize it as classic rock) bands, too.

Yeah, you're right, genres really don't help, they only generalize types of music. But techno is techno, more beepy type, synth electronica, whereas trance is melodic and smooth(NOT the typical breakdown then speedup stuff that the genre's popular, crappy artists have made so apparent these days), and breakbeat/dnb is well, drum synths and quick cuts and such.

There's alot of variation, just as there is with almost every genre. It just takes someone who knows the genres to inform the public about what is correct.

I'm mostly rollin' to hiphop, everything from mainstream to the legendary unda'ground, which means that if you're rollin' in the hachi with me, you're listening to anything from Luda to De La Soul. I consider myself to have good taste in hiphop for the most part, so your ears won't bleed... too much.

I recommend MF Doom. He's got insane instrumentals, and some crazy ass rhymes. Would make Luda turn tail and run.

What annoys me is when people try to act intelligent but then have grammatical errors along with spelling errors in one jumbled sentence.

NIN didn't create anything worthy of mentioning, most of their songs are pure chorus with no meaning to the lyrics.

We can get stereotypical with all music types.

Country - Tractors and growing up on farms

cRap - bitches, hoes, bling.

Rock - I'm angry, I hate you

Emo - I cut myself, I wanna die

Techno - I'm in the closet...

Shadows Fall I've never heard on the radio, but I believe they do play them on late night metal shows as well.

I like the rock they play on the radio, but I get tired of hearing it. 3 Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Nickleback, Papa Roach, all of it...I'm just tired of hearing it.

I crazy as it sounds, Casey is right. Each genre can be stereotyped. Generally, I tend to stereotype, however, what Casey said is true, for the most part. There are exceptions, but for the most part, it's true.

This is some of many. I like a lot of different Trance/Techno/Jtrance/Jpop and stuff like that. In the words of Monban(or Gatekeeper), I am into the experimental music...stuff most people don't listen to.

I find music to be a big part of life. There's so much music out there. In my opinion, some music is better than others, and some music I wouldn't even call music...ie rap. That's just my personal opinion. I respect each individuals interest in their own music.

I don't think I'm the one that needs to go into it, seriously. Read the lyrics, and you HONESTLY think they have a 'deep meaning'? I'm refering to NIN, not the other bands you listen to.

Also, As for the listening to mainly radio music? Who cares, people think now-a-days it's trendy to be un-trendy. Here's a quick example from the forums:

I don't think DDR is truly "dead". It's just that most of the people we know, don't play as often as in the past. Personally, I've started playing more and have a renewed interest because I've found a small group here at school who play. I'll probably always like the game. It just seems as though it's not as trendy anymore. ^^ yay.

Seriously now, thats how people think anymore. "Hey this isn't popular so I'm going to like it." Doing that is a trend in itself and turning yourself into a hypocrit, but I think I digress.... Oh well. Also most people don't steal their music from the internet to get it. Most of the music I listen are Merch Items. CD's I buy at concerts, that's how I hear of all the bands I mainly listen to.

As far as NIN's lyrics go, and the 'deep' meaning you speak of, it varies a lot. What Trent uses a lot of are metaphors, a song that says one thing that doesn't make much sense in itself, but eludes to something else entirely. Some or the lyrics at first glance don't appear to be anything special, and some just look like he put random phrases together because they rhymed, but generally, those are the songs that do mean something. Like a hidden meaning. Metaphors were pretty common place in the past, but these days, artists just come out and say it, hence the 'need' for the FCC.
However, regardless of what the lyrics mean, I like the music, and I like the way he does so many different things with the music, while still keeping the same kind of style. There are a lot of bands I listen to, that I don't like the singer/lyrics at all, but I still listen to just for the music. An example of this would be Cradle of Filth. Love the music, but often times can't stand the vocals.

As for the radio, un trendy being untrendy thing you addressed, the only reason I added the radio band thing, was because someone else mentioned it. It wasn't directed at you or anything. Yes, I realize it's now a trend, and it's quite irritating. I listen to what I listen to because I like it, not because no one's ever heard of it. I shop at Hot Topic occasionally, but have been for years, long before the Evanescence 'it's cool to be goth' fad. I like Evanescence, by the way, but I don't like the middle school girls who pretend to be depressed because they admire Amy Lee. I don't like Punk or Emo, which seems to be largly where the 'cool to be uncool' thing is going on, so I won't even to into that.

I'm aware that a lot of music can be stereotyped, I never denied that. Genres in general are easily stereotyped, however, there are many bands within the genres that don't fit the sterotypes. I sterotype genres of music, but not individual artists (unless I've found they do indeed fit the stereotype.) Country and hip hop are the two genres I stereotype the most, but mostly hip hop. I've done my homework though, so to speak. I've been subjected to it for days on end at both of my jobs, so I have a reason to hate it. I've heard a lot of it, and I don't like ANY of it. That, and the 'ghetto culture' drives me absolutely insane.

The important thing as always is what the music means to you. To me, alot of NIN lyrics mean things to me, that and I just love the music. That and Trent Reznor is a total hottie man.
