I'll have to go and see how "neutral" it is for myself.

Your thoughts?
Yikes, that sort of thing scares me; let us know how it goes. I grew up in the deep south, and I had to take 'Bible' class every week at our public school until grade 6 or so (this was 'how to not go to hell' class, not 'Bible as historical object' class).

So has anyone seen 'Jesus Camp' yet? It's a great but horrifying documentary about the ways the religious right indoctrinate their youth.

They say the #1 reason people are atheists is because of Christians. That through acts of supposedly children of God they turn there backs on God. That is what happened to me. I went to church with Christina and her family, and her Grandmother is a "Prophet of God" and God speaks to her supposedly. And I took witness to some of her things coming to pass and I believe that that He does speak to her and I believed that till she saw a vision about me. She pretty much said God told her that I would turn gay...which is just extremely fucking retarded. Why would I believe in a God who would tell one of his own that this guy is a homo.... I don't think he would but still this Woman of God says it is so. IF God would say a thing like that to his Prophet....I don't want anything to do with him. I don't go to church or read my bible or anything of that manner anymore. I block Religion in general out of my mind.
There are a lot of people out there who 'have visions,' or hear insight from outside sources...but, being a christian, she can only assume that it's god, when it could be anything. Hell, for all we know, she could just be fucking nuts, or wanting the attention.
Depending on your views, there are a lot of things that can deliver messages or inspire visions. Not all of them are good. Hell, even lesser beings can speak to or work into our dreams...they don't have to be as 'omnipotent' or 'all seeing' as a god.
So, if something decided to tell Grams that you're a homo, it doesn't mean it's going to happen. It could just be something trying to inspire mischief or family strife. Hell, even one of your ex's ancestors could pull something like that if they had a reason not to like you and want you ousted from the family.
There's going to be a "Pure-Fun" rally at my school on Thursday, led by a Christian organization that is manditory for everyone to go to. They're trying to make it based on no religious views, but of ways to live your life. (cough...straightedge)
I'm leary of anything in schools sponsored by religious organizations. It wouldn't bother me so much if it were optional, but mandatory?
Even if they are doing a good deed to the students...you know damn well if the same event were sponsored by say, a pagan group, or even a muslim group these days, the school wouldn't allow it.

My senior year of highschool there were a lot of religious clubs that would meet during home room. A group of people in my art class decided to start their own club (which is allowed if you go through the proper channels). I believe they called it the 'free thinkers society.' The idea was to get together and discuss things...religion, politics, philosophy, etc. I joined, and we were able to meet, oh...twice I think. We refused to change our name or our what we were allowed to discuss...so the school shut it down.

Nice, huh? The school encouraged countless groups to get together and discuss christianity on a mass scale...but discussing real world issues and other religions is just plain out of the question.

Shortly thereafter we started printing off fliers and propoganda and posting them around the school. My favorite was the one that had the Nazi eagle, gripping the school logo instead of a schwastika in it's talons, and said 'Carroll is a fascist institution.' Our art teacher loved it.

Straight edge has hardcore ties. It's a culture thing, not just a lifestyle thing. I support people living that lifestyle but don't call it straight edge.

I live that lifestyle, I just call it "straight edge" because that's how I hear it commonly referred to these days. I do understand it came from the hardcore rock scene, which I'm not affiliated with, really, but I just say "straight edge" as the way to reference it quickly, because it's faster than saying "no alcohol/drugs/cigarettes," even if that's not the correct reference for me. It's a bad habit.

My thoughts exactly. The thing that got me, is that even though they say it's a neutral standpoint, and "is not directly referencing God," it's basically the same, but with a different name. The philosophies discussed are the same ones Christians want promoted to worship God, but they just say "it's good to live by."

You can rename a statue all you want, but at the end of the day, it's still the same statue, with a different name.

isnt ian in some project called the evens right now? i heard something of theirs, idk if you would like it, it was more postrock indie
im glad that i dont know any kids that actually associate themselves with the straightedge lifestyle seriously, all the kids that ive seen that are "sxe hxc" are thinking its some war bullshit and are really militant and act like straightedge is a gang. the only people that have ever called me straightedge are all the people who have different lifestyle choices than me in the substance abuse category. sure i listen to hardcore and post hardcore but its not like thats the only thing i listen to, and I never go to shows really. lets just admit that the straightedge scene is dead already; just like punk straightedge has become more of a fashion statement than anything. straightedge has its roots being a reaction to the self destructive punks, being an intelligent alternative to the lifestyle many were living. now its just dumb as shit and i hate everyone who thinks they're "xcore" and all this scene bullshit. brb myspace i have to post this in my blog so all the people on my train can read about it and i can get scene creds for the naked pic of me with my bandanna kthx *slits wrists*

Haha, that was fun reading.

There's so many kids here in Oregon that take straight edge and turn it into a gang thing. We've had so many fights based on it and it makes kids like me who live that lifestyle have to fight to throw off that thug appearance. I go to shows and love the energy of straightedge hardcore because typically the message is a positive one but there's assholes who take it as a call to arms. I also remember seeing kids who claimed the whole edge image and turn around the next week at a party, wasted out of their mind.

Yeah, Ian's doing some solo stuff and some indie projects. I like most of his stuff.
