Actually, looking back at my last post I did make the mistake of citing specific numbers for people with lower IQs than me. <shrugs> I don't really care. You felt the need to talk about your i-penis well before I said anything suggesting that I had a high IQ. Is there a reason you're still flaming about this subject, or are you just bitter that I'm not impressed you're in Mensa?
i could give 2 shits how you feel about that; it's the tone of your posting. you come off as some intellectual einstein constantly.

Oh, so let me make sure I have this right: you think that I present myself as intelligent, and seemingly-intelligent people make you feel uncomfortable. So you divert an essentially unrelated conversation to a debate about my relative intelligence (which you think can be measured by IQ) in the hopes of proving to me or yourself or some weird combination thereof that I'm not as intelligent as I seem.

I can understand that logic so far, though I find it immature. But what element makes you think it's a good idea to continue pressing the issue once I've told you I'm really not interested? Do you want me to disclose my IQ, or something? Or do you want me to disavow being intelligent? Or is it just a kneejerk response to my less-than-satisfying reactions thus far? Or is it, as I asked in my previous post, some other reason that you'd like to share?

pretty much everyone else on this board gets their point across in a few lines and you don't have to read an essay just to understand what they're trying to say.

I would say that it's better to have a long, wordy, intelligent, and properly punctuated/spelled post rather than something like

I'm surprised you don't agree.

(No offense, Potter, I had to make a point ;))

Off (current) topic:

Ok, I know we were just talking about weird spam messages in some thread, but I couldn't find it with a search, so I just HAVE to post this here. I just checked my mail, this wasn't even in the Bulk folder!

Now, Di, I dont want to quarrelwith you but I hate to hear anyone bragging about their folks. She was not pretty but herappearance was striking . They were quite sure now she was dead and all they wanted was toget her home without being seen. Well, Id have fell off our loft once if Curt hadnt caught me,said Jen sulkily. Cock Robin is in a southern land of sunshine, said Anne. Di, who was hungry, would have enjoyed the meal . Charlottetown,Dovie said, was the only place where people knew anything. Bob Taylors got to have an operation on his tonsils, said MissCornelia. Di and Jenny went home across the fields, which made it little morethan a quarter of a mile. Jenny turned the full battery of her extraordinary eyes upon Di. Of course I know my own mothers name, said Nan, a trifle on herdignity. It is my opinion that Jessie King will make David Young a farbetter wife than he deserves . Of courseI wont be able to tell even you, Mummy, because Ive promised Iwouldnt. I think shes harmless enough apart from her habit of exaggeration. Two dark figures came through the gate andup the driveway. Penny is said to be a carpenterwho couldnt make a living carpentering . Wouldnt it be dreadful if my father and mother fought like that? Curt had hishand, which he had cut on a broken bottle, tied up with a blood-stained rag. It wouldnt be RIGHT to have eleven kittens. Oh, wont you get a licking if youve killed her, George Andrew!

...I have NO IDEA who this is from, so I doubt it's a joke.

Yes, but the part that I don't understand (and the funniest part) is the story below it...what does it have to do with the picture? Or with anything for that matter?
 You get spam...on a FAX MACHINE?

Ah, okay. So what you dislike is the fact that I don't leave my statements terse and vague enough for you to read whatever you want into them. Sadly, that's not going to change. This may be a politically incorrect attitude, but I want people to get as much of the original meaning as possible when they read what I write - not whatever they feel like putting in my mouth.

I've said my piece and I'll stop discussing it now. Feel free to continue, though, since you seem like you have a lot of anger issues you need to get out there. Of course, you also seem like the kind of person who just has to get the last word, so I promise I'll stop interfering with that.

Apologies to everyone who's not sam or I who's had to read through the last ~page of this thread. Return to random thoughts follows:

It happens. This is why I don't have a home phone.

It's semi-random gibberish meant to defeat popular anti-spam devices by lowering the proportion of "bad words" (stock, buy now, special offer) to total text. Bayesian filters generally work off (among other things) the ratio of "spam words" to "normal words" in a given e-mail. Thus, by putting automatically extracted excerpts from trashy fiction in the body of the e-mail, spammers lower their spam quotient and thus the likelihood that their e-mail will be caught by the filter. And now you know... the rest of the story.

Pun very definitely intentional.

Ah, but you see, I thought of this, and it wouldn't make sense, because the only place they mention stocks and whatever the hell they're trying to get me to do is in an image. I highly doubt these filters are sophisticated enough to read images. Also, wouldn't putting these random excerpts from 'trashy fiction' into the message somehow tip off the reader that it's SPAM, thereby defeating the purpose? They should at least use some HTML to make that crap small and hard to read so it would throw off the spam filter, but not catch the eye of the user.

Nice to see that sam isn't the only one who needs to get his issues out there. Thanks for keeping him company, hascoolnickname, I'm sure it makes him feel better. Now on to the people who are actually saying something.

(Hey, you asked for condescending.)

I think the reader's going to know it's spam anyway. As to the whole image thing... maybe they've just gotten into the habit? I'm admittedly as baffled as you are.

I like that. I have no idea if it was intentional, but I still like it.
