Adult-Proof Ringtone

I came across this a while back and I thought it was pretty interesting. In short, it's a very VERY high pitched sound that can get really annoying, but can usually only be heard by people under the age of 30. as the article states very few people over 30 can hear it. I saw this on CNN a few months back, only on there they said that the limit was 20, not 30...30 wouldn't be near as useful as 20, as with 20 you could take it to class and be almost guaranteed that the teacher wouldn't hear it, and that any student would. However, you're pretty likely to have a teacher (or some authoritative figure) under 30 in the room.

I have an adult proof ringtone, it's called vibrate.
This was pretty easy for me to hear, its near the same sound a TV makes when it's on.

I sometimes think that vibrate is worse than a ring. It causes more of a disruption because when you hear someone's phone buzzing EVERYONE checks their pockets (this might be more of a college thing)

My problem with when I put my phone on vibrate is that it's almost always in my purse or on the tabletop. When it's in my purse, usually it's VERY CONVENIENTLY nestled up with my keys when it goes off, so it rattles, or when it's on the table...we all know what that's like.

Me, my cousin (who's 16) and my aunt (who's like 38 ) could all hear it perfectly. I'm about to try it on my uncle, who is almost 40.

Ouch that's an extremely annoying sound (don't listen with headphones!). Anyway, I have very sensitive hearing, and I can easily hear high-pitched notes, so I'd probably able to hear the ringtone in a class even though I'm over 30. Too bad I'm not the teacher for someone with such a phone

Didn't we just talk about this topic on another thread somewhere? I seem to remember someone posting something about an high-pitched tone to keep kids from coming in certain places or something...? Hmm maybe that was another board.

I can also hear when a (CRT) television is on even if the volume is muted. The tube generates a similar sound...though not with nearly that intensity (unless perhaps the television is severely broke-ass).

<--------- heard it loud and clear, but didn't find it really unpleasant in the way that she does higher-pitched sounds. Odd.

The problem with a ringtone in that frequency range is that it's very difficult to determine the location of the source (at least for most people). So everyone in class would be diving for their phones anyway.

And yes, we did just talk about this topic. Well, if "just" means "a couple of months ago"...

My grandmother has a really old television that emits a faint high frequency sound, it's not enough to drive me crazy but it does hurt a little bit. When I was younger though I'd run through her house with my hands over my ears begging her to turn it off. She and my parents would just look at me weird.
