Even the so called 'support' classes can be deadly on their own if you play them right. It all depends on how you play, and what skills you use.
Hell, even a Mesmer can be deadly if you play your cards right.

don't feel special because your using mercs. I passed ascension with all mercs. The mercs are overpowered IMO.

also, deadly mesmer? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

sorry, had to laugh at that thought.

Mesmer is most useless class in game.

I thought they were pretty useless, too. If you try playing with one in melee combat, yeah...that's a death sentence.
The trick is to use your domination magic, and illusion magic. You have to know what the enemy you're facing is going to do, so you can cast a counter spell before he does it.
Example, a spell-caster or healer enemy. Cast Backfire on them, and when they try to cast a spell, they'll damage themselves. If you're leveled enough in domination, this can be quite useful.
On the same note, on a brute/melee enemy, casting Empathy will damage them every time they try to attack. That damage adds up really, really fast. Especially if you couple that with a spell like Conjure Phantasm, which continuously drains their health, and quickly at that.

If you play with tactics in mind, a Mesmer can be quite useful. If you try to play a mesmer like you would say, oh...an elementalist, you'll be sadly disappointed. You can't just randomly cast spells. You actually have to think...a little.

They are. If you start a new Mesmer character, they suck. Terribly. They don't really get good until you start getting some better spells, and a better knowledge of how they work.

Even so, I'd never make a strictly Mesmer character. I took Elementalist as primary, and just use my Mesmer spells as a secondary option, or when I get a good opportunity.
