How the fuck do I play doubles?

Post by Merk » Wed Mar 09, 2011 1:44 pm

I wouldn't mind getting in to Beet again and doing some 14 key to spice things up and renew my interest in the game. I'm not sure who all here has any experience with doubles but I'd like to open a thread for discussion!

How the eff do I even select 14 key on Ho's Sirius machine?
Am I really going to have to plunk down $1,000 for a DJ Dao to have a decent doubles experience?
Has anyone normal cleared Quasar [A14] yet?
What bullshit charts do I have the pleasure of looking forward to?
Is Pimpmachine the only good 14-key player in the US?
Are there any good lagless 16:9 TVs that I can use for Beet? Playing on a 4:3 CRT is not good for doubles. Yes I know there are timing adjustments in Beet but it never really became super useful until Empress.

Discuss.

- push start, turn turntable to select doubles, push start again
- I actually had a decent experience with two regular KOCs. It wasn't great, but it was fine. Two ASCs would be pretty darn good and should be less than $1000. :)
- Does anyone normal even play IIDX?
- Any of the old school doubles where it's really just playing both of the regular charts at the same time should prove sufficiently bullshitty for you. Basically, any chart that asks you to scratch and key on the same hand.
- I like to think I'm a reasonably decent 14-key player. I'm hardly leet, but I can hold my own. So I guess it just depends on your definition of "good."
- Try a Panasonic Viera plasma. I've had very good luck with those. The TV in my IIDX cab is one as are the TVs in the basement and living room. If you're playing console IIDX, 4:3 TVs are actually ok as there is a mode that basically just eliminates the movies and just has the scrolls at full screen size.

Currently, DJ Dao is really the only place where an ASC can be purchased and it's gonna be about $550 to get the cheapest ASC from them. I have not seen a KASC available new in years now so if you can find one reasonably priced buy it fast.

Ha! I didn't notice this until now.

No no Brian, you see I was asking if anyone had cleared Quasar Another 14 without using either the Easy or Hard lifebar modifiers. As far as I know no one had done it yet and there's a handful of charts that still have never been cleared at all despite all the efforts of the best 14key players in Nippon.

Ah, I see. Maybe if you had capitalized Normal I might have caught your meaning. Maybe not. I think my answer is funnier anyway. :P

Yeah pretty much. Normal people play sports and shit and mack on their preferred gender while the rest of us rubes sit around and develop arthritis on our music video games and mack on anime characters and furries.

I've wanted to play doubles for years, but just recently got my setup to make it happen. I've been playing doubles for about a month now and it is amazing. Doubles is a strange beast to learn, yet alone master.

If you play singles with only two fingers on each hand, doubles is going to hurt your head, hands and eyes for the first while. You'll find yourself hitting the spaces in between buttons more often than not.

1) Put one hand on each side. Keep them there. Some people disagree, so to each his own, but for me I like to start with thumb, index, middle and ring on the 4 white keys, then go from there. Just make sure that if you play key 1 on P1 or key 7 on P2 that you're using your pinky because it will promote use of fingers you may not use and it will also improve your availability for the next note or chord.

2) Try to learn with a song you already know on singles very well. I couldn't pass a 3 that I knew from DDR but I could pass a 5 that I had played on singles IIDX the first time I tried.

3) Play on a slower speed. If you play the song on HS 3.0 on singles, play it on HS 1.5 to start.

4) PRACTICE. There's really no way around that one. You will fail at first, but eventually you will improve and the movement while playing doubles on an ASC plus the fact you have twice the keys makes it a thrilling experience.

Why blank out the screen? It's just IIDX...I can tell from the reflection on the controller.

originally posted on bemanistyle and just copied the URL. Some sites are picky about questionable bemani content and I didn't know your rules on it :)

Sorry for not introducing myself, I'm C.T./mouseish/TheLegendofMouse/whatever name used online. I helped foudn PurdueDDR back in 2005 and have played with a few indy, ft wayne and purdue people since. I knew Adam (LikeableRodent) pretty well back in 05-07 and also know amp pretty well. I'm living in Chicago at this time working in webhosting, but I just stumbled upon this thread about doubles and figured I'd add a bit of info that helped me start to learn. I've lurked the indyDDR forums on and off from time to time and thought I might have had an account, but failed logins proved me wrong, so I finally signed up.

Anyway welcome to indyDDR, Steve! http://twitter.com/#!/dumpsterkeeper

Do you have any sort of price estimate for your Beet controllers? I'll be honest your website is pretty bad about giving a ball park figure on how much you're selling your shit for.

Does Amp say shit about me behind my back to you?

What do you think about me?

How do you not know Brian Ho?

Isn't that Dan guy from Texas super annoying? That kid lives and breathes the internet and although I've never met him I imagine he's fat.

Do you have any good stories of people being really pissed off about their controllers?

Post your VJArmy profile so I can judge you and determine your worth.

- Yeah its bad, Steve is working on some new pages for IIDX stuff. Figure about $250 starting for IIDX singles then options like sanwas, LEDs and such. For full quote, email steve with what you want, what color you want it, if you want TT/key LEDs and if you have a preference for switch and button type. EDIT: http://desktoparcade.com/iidasc-price-info/
Does Amp say shit about me behind my back to you?
- heh, I talked to amp a few times in the past couple weeks for the first time in a couple years, I haven't heard him talk any shit :p
What do you think about me?
- i dont know you really :/
How do you not know Brian Ho?
- I met brian at DDR-A-thon in 07 or 06 something (first year he had putt putts machine). Thats about it though.

- dan's a nice guy :)
Do you have any good stories of people being really pissed off about their controllers?
- Yes, lots. people don't like waiting for controllers to be built.
Post your VJArmy profile so I can judge you and determine your worth.
- I haven't updated that in ages....from when I first started playing in 05 or so. there are some images on my facebook if you're looking to see how well i can explode rectangles. I know people are better than me and people are worse than me. Bemani is fun, making it a numbers game kills it for me. I can hold my own, thats all (some 10s on singles IIDX, 6s and a couple 7s on doubles, 34s on popn).

Chicago eh? Do you ever frequent the local arcades? I'm pretty jelly of X2 and Technika 2.
Music is a special thing because everyone is wrong on everything but it all works out in the end and we all get high as shit.

Yeah, I go up to GW on occasion but its rape to play there. There is also nickel city which has BeatMania 6th Mix, DMX 2nd, DDR Ex and some oITG hack. 4 nickels per credit, its not bad but is full of screaming children usually. I also have home parties for bemani, not that you guys need to come up or worry since Ho does that with real arcade hardware ;)...but if you're ever in chicago, I have them every couple weeks.

Anyway, Doesn't anyone play doubles??? I was hoping to keep this conversation going because no one else I know here plays anything but singles.

I like you, you seem like a nice guy and I hope you post more since we're a laid back and fun bunch of motherfuckers. Nickel City is awesome and it was probably the best moment of my last Chicago trip.

Thank you for proving that once again Brian Ho literally knows everyone in the US bemani community.

Anyway, I'd like to play doubles if only to strengthen my left hand and help my singles game. As in DDR, doubles is just more expensive and in the game like IIDX where the learning curve is so steep it's incredibly discouraging to start on the bottom rung of the ladder all over again - you might as well be playing a new game. If I had a IIDX cabinet I would probably go exclusively doubles since I've pretty much plateaued in the singles game, but alas, I'm just rocking with a USKOC. As far as I know absolutely no one plays doubles in the US other than Pimpmachine who lives in Idaho or Iowa or some other place in the Great Plains. For what it's worth he's really good at doubles!

If your controllers don't rick barrs I might consider getting one if it's in the $500 range. The best thing about nerds is that they have a lot of disposable income and expensive hobbies that turn the pussy ice cold, naw meen?

How the fuck do you know my fraternity brother, Chris Stewart?
