Thanks for the laugh.
The fact we're in another damn format war makes both of them--and us--losers. :(

Yes, but it's pretty much just a matter of how long it will take for HD-DVD to completely die off at this point. Walmart has apparently cleared out their stock of HD-DVD players, and they're also marking down the 360's HD-DVD players from $200 down to $130. Also, Microsoft has said that it's highly likely that they'll support Blu-Ray if it wins the format war. Oh, and Blu-Ray is reportedly outselling HD-DVD by more than 2 to 1 at the moment. So, yeah, it looks like HD-DVD isn't going to be around for terribly long.

VHS was losing to Beta, and Beta was the obvious choice by physical size and capacity...but then VHS got porn on it and won.

Actually, if anything, the fact that you couldn't put most feature length movies on a single Beta was probably one of the leading contributors to its failure. VHS held almost twice as much as Beta. VHS also offered 4 hour version around the same time that Beta finally hit 2.

Beta cassettes were also a little bit smaller than VHS, but not by enough to cause much difference.

The porn argument seems overblown, though I would still not fully discount its effect. Now, the fact that Sony kept it rather proprietary (like they have with UMD and MemoryStick) probably DID hurt its adoption, as VHS decks were available from tons of companies with minimal licensing.
A normality test:

If you find this funny, you're a nerd.
If neither of the above apply, you are normal. Congratulations.

My understanding was that Sony charged a hefty licensing fee to anyone making Beta equipment. As a result, Beta equipment was more costly than its VHS counterparts.

Beta was technically superior in virtually every way but not so much that the average consumer would notice or care. They just went with what was cheaper. VHS won, Beta lost...end of story.

I won't bother with picking a HD format until this stupid war ends, simple as that. My main hope is that pan and scan is killed off once and for all regardless of who wins.

Edit: Oh, and that they use H.264 for the releases over the now ancient MPEG-2 format and the utter piece of sh*t known as Microsoft's VC-1.
