Imagine Pop'n Music, but put the buttons on a DDR-style stage. So instead of hitting the buttons with your hands, you hit them with your feet.

Sometime in the future when I have a free day I'm planning on heading back to that arcade to get a more detailed analysis of the machine.


Every once in awhile I happen to come across a weird Konami Bemani-esque/inspired arcade game that I had previously never heard of. For instance, notice the Step Champ machine to the left of Pop'n Stage.

pop'n stage is ancient. I'm amazed there are any still in running condition at this point.

According to System 16 it came out in 1999 and runs on the same old-ass hardware that Pop'n 1-3 run on.

But yeah, it's old and obviously didn't catch on.

Not only is that one running, it looks like it fairly new condition, like no one plays it...

The part where I am confused is how exactly do you play it, it looks like a cross pattern like PIU is recessed while the rest is raised....I wish there was one nearby in the states for me to try out. Oh well, I guess I will just have something else to find and do when I go to Japan.

From what I've gathered, the stage layout is the same as Pump. However, the game plays kinda like pop'n in that the notes are keysounded. I believe it is the only production dance music game that is keysounded (Neon FM is/was supposed to be keysounded, also, but has not been taken to production at this time).

Most of the songs are from old pop'n music, and there are some songs that came out for pop'n stage, most of which have now shown up in pop'n music.

That would be Dance 86.4, another Bemani game from Konami.

Neon FM is something that, near as I can tell, never materialized and isn't particularly likely to, though they insist they're still working on it. I can't imagine what a commercial release of the game would entail, given the patent minefield that is music gaming.

I have video of me playing Dance 86.4 btw, it's on bemanistyle, just search for Dance 86.4 in the tatsujins.

Neon FM is still very much in production; it should be released sometime before 2008, around october-ish.

Yeah, it's PC only, as far as I can tell, but it's still eventually trying to make money being sold etc.

It really sucks too; when Betson screwed them over, they had the entire game 95% ready to go, the game was coded, everything was ready, the pad needed a bit of work but come on, it was a pad without moving parts and that was literally unbreakable; pretty much you could drop 800+ pounds on it (was tested, in fact) and it wouldn't even crack. No, it didn't use lazers; it used some technology that even I have no idea what they did to pull that off.

If you're wondering why i'm all up about it or whatever, I did a video for the game when it was originally coming out, and now i'm doing six or seven more videos for various songs (including the theme song and boss song). Sooo yeah, i'm talking to the creators almost every day and being updated on progress etc. etc.

I'm not Konami though; i'm not going to jump on your ass if you say it's a sucky game or something and call you a raging faggot like everyone over at DDRFreak when people say DDR sucks (I got banned for saying DDR Extreme 1 for PS2 sucked.)

I mean, if you say something that's super incorrect i'm going to correct you (the 3-panel question) but yeah.
