Ikaruga

Post by JL143 » Wed Mar 30, 2005 2:53 pm

Anyone else played this gem of a game? Its insanely difficult, but possibly one of the most fun games I've ever played. Its out for dreamcast in Japan or Gamecube here.
Yep.

I've never heard of it. Could you describe it or give a link to a page on it?

Sweet, a Japan shooter thread!

Ikaruga is one of the hardest and best I've ever played. What really makes it genius though, is it's simplicity.

Your ship has two sides. Light and Dark. Enemies have two colors. Light and Dark. When dark, you are imune to dark shots. Same with light. When light, you fire light shots. Same with dark. Shots of the same color as the enemy do half as much as shots with the opposite color.

You also have a super missle bar thingy. As you absorb shots, the bar increases. You can discharge the bar to release a bunch of auto-hitting missiles.

When you kill three enemies of the same color, your combo or 'chain' increases by one. Beginning players most likely won't worry about this, as the game is plenty hard as is. Expert players play for score, which is almost entirely dependant on, for lack of a better term, full comboing stages. And the boss fights.... oh god the boss fights...

If you are at all into games like this, Aero Fighters, Raiden, 1942, Castle Shikigami, Gradius, R-Type, Giga Wing, Psyvariar, ect. you need to check these out. These are completely free and a lot of fun.

This game auto-creates boss fight after boss fight. You can play in a lot of different modes too, including Ikaruga.

Another shooter.

Yet another shooter.

Endlessly fun. When you kill an enemy, pick it up and it will attach to you firing at other enemies.

Enjoy!

if you like ikaruga and have a sega saturn, download radiant silvergun. ikaruga is the "sequel" to this game....and it is by far the best vertical shooter ever made.

Yeah, I've heard it's a blast. Still haven't had a chance to play it though. I wish I had a dreamcast... all the best shooters are for it.

I wrote a long, detailed list of awesome shmups (to the best of my ability, at least), only to be struck by the April Fools shenanigans!

Hell; I'll show 'em to you when you're in town next. BTW: James was totally rocked by Radiant Silvergun. :P

All three are breaking level 10, but I'm still getting my ass kicked toward the end of stage 2 (4?). I've got a bunch of Saturn games. The imports are mainly shooters and the Capcom fighters. Then, there's that one pinball game. Sadly, my RS is slightly less than legal. I'm going to break down and invest in a copy when my tax return gets here.

meh i don't pay for games that aren't getting any sort of monetary value to the developers....all my saturn games are copies

sega doesn't care, we ran a site where we traded saturn isos for a while and it was pretty well known although it's pretty dead now http://www.segaxtreme.com

I gotta be honest......

I picked up this game a bit ago, and I STILL have trouble with it.

I get so confused with the bullet armor system sometimes that at times, I'll lose all my lives on the first stage....

Not a bad gig, though. 2/5.

thought you'd like to know the new ssf can emulate radiant silvergun...only problem is the emulator is 100% japanese...and requires an amd fx chip or intel p4 3.0ghz+

if you really care you can get the latest release here:
