Mic check mic check...

Post by Fluffyumpkins » Fri May 25, 2012 10:20 am

I want to start using Vent, but I don't have a good mic or headset.

Any suggestions? Looking at Potter, Riot, Pokeyabyss, and SDP specifically.

My headphone + mic is pretty nice! if you want a standalone mic then I don't know what to tell you. But I like these mofos"

I have a Radioshack branded headphone/mic set from 10+ years ago. Nothing special, but it gets the job done.

Thinking more about it, can I just use my Xbox mic? I assume so.

I can't recommend Plantronics. Their headsets are clunky and should be called Plannobsolescence in my book. I abhor built in mics because a lot of "gaming" headsets have really shitty mics. I'm also kind of rough with headsets though so being able to detach a mic when I don't need to use Mumble or Vent is always nice.

I'm a big fan of the Astro headsets, especially with the amp. They're a bit pricy though. The A30s are on-ear, lighter, cheaper and still have the nice mic features. A40s are better for a home environment and you want to splurge.

If you have the money or prefer a heavier headset, Astros. If you wanna save and get pretty comparable quality, Steelseries V2.
I really love CS:GO's 64 tick servers.

I have just used this for the last 8 years and it's worked really really well:

I have also used these since 2005 or so as well:

Very good headphones, though that price is way too high; you can find them normally around 100 these days. But yeah, I don't know too much about headphone/mic combinations, but the desktop Logitech mics have always been very sturdy and had good sound quality in my experience. I have access to a Vent server that we've been using for Diablo a tiny bit so far, so just tell me when you need info.

no idea, I just use my giant headphones and a lavalier film mic whenever I need to use vent/ts. looks goofy, I sound amazing though. I feel like dan rathers doing the weather

If you want everyone to hate you you could use an old Rock Band microphone. Really other people can't hear your headphones (actually they can if you put them in the mic port, but that's weird), so they don't matter.
I've had bad luck with headsets so I'm actually using a headset right now with a broken mic and a cheap standup mic next to me for the actual microphone. Not the highest quality, but it doesn't really need to be to talk to internet peeps.

I went with the same thing Riot has, though I haven't bought cans yet.

Don't use speakers with a microphone; everyone will hate you.
