This is an interest check thread.

In case anyone cares (you don't), on-line poker is pretty much dead for the time being unless you play on sites like Cake Poker or Carbon Poker. I have $230 that I probably will not have access to for a long time / ever.

With that said I am still down to use Chad's house as a place to play some live low-stakes poker and bro it the fuck up.

Do we want to have a poker night? Does anyone know how to play anything other than Hold 'em? Do Tim or Brandon know how to play? Who the hell else in Indy would be down for this? They don't have to be all gay for music games but they'll have to be tolerant of 'em since we'll more than likely be talking about them the entire time.

MY ANALYSIS (none of you care but I gots time to kill):

Yeah it's pretty shitty that businesses like Wachovia can get away with 100+ million dollar fine for laundering money for fucking Mexican drug cartels but HOLY SHIT on-line poker gogogo not in our country shut 'em down.

The Department of Justice isn't entirely to blame though, the sites that are under accusations (Pokerstars, Full Tilt Poker, and Ultimate Bet/Absolute Poker) did do shady shit when it came to depositing and withdrawing money. However, they had to be shady because although poker is not explicitly illegal federally in the United States, poker on the internet has become de facto illegal thanks to the UIGEA. Because of this act, all payment processors in the United States would not do business with these sites since they very loosely fall under the definition of "gambling sites." Therefore, to circumvent this bullshit law and do business in the United States, the poker sites basically had to launder money. Surprisingly, this has been going on for a long time and most people knew about this, however it is only recently that significant evidence has come up to prove that these sites were laundering money thanks to this whippersnapper.

And this is pretty much the root of the problem. The act of playing poker is legal as it was determined to be a game of skill (and rightfully so) back in the early 1900s, however with the UIGEA you cannot legally place a "bet or wager" on the internet. I can go down to French Lick and throw down in a live $1/$2 game with a cop, a judge, and the president and not be thrown in jail but according to the UIGEA, because you need to "bet" in order to play the game of poker that exact same poker game with me and my checks and balances bros has suddenly become illegal on the internet.

Ironically enough this is where I am optimistic. My greatest hope is that in the aftermath of all of this we will finally have legislation passed that legalizes, regulates, and creates oversight for on-line poker. It is clear that the UIGEA is too broad and that poker should not be categorized as unlawful gaming. Maybe now we'll finally show mouth-breathers like Riot who say "LOL POKER IS ILLEGAL YOU ARE GIVING THE CASINO ALL YOUR MONEY YOU CAN'T WIN SERVES YOU RIGHT LOL NOW YOU CAN PAY TAXES YOU FREELOADER" just how fucking wrong they are and we can get rid of this mainstream notion that poker is some table game akin to Blackjack or Craps.

Did these poker sites launder money? Absolutely. Should they be prosecuted? Yes. Should they have had to launder money in the first place? Nope! Will Wall Street execs be jailed for knowingly selling mortgages they knew were bad? Nope! Will huge companies continue to make bad decisions because they can just get bankrolled by the American taxpayer? Yup! Are real corporate criminals like Wachovia still exploiting the fuck out of people for a quick buck? Indeed! Is the government turning a blind eye? Not if its on-line poker!

I'm just saying. Ever since I graduated college in '09 I have become extremely fucking bitter at the government. My impotent white rage knows no bounds.

As an anecdote, when I deposited money on to Pokerstars (I have only had to do so twice because I'm so baller lolololol) it showed up as something really goofy on my bank statement. I've closed my old account a long time ago but I believe my $25 dollar deposit showed up as being payment for some on-line flower shop. Withdrawing money showed similar results. Note that in the picture I don't have a big fancy check from Pokerstars, it's from some weird financial firm totally unrelated to the site.
