Final Fantasy XIII

Post by Riot » Wed Apr 15, 2009 2:55 pm

So the japanese demo came out last night and there is video of the demo already.

That's part one, follow the side bar for parts 2-9. Looks great and it looks like the feedback so far has been very positive. Apparently very different from traditional Final Fantasies, but still keeps that flair. I've been pumped for this game for years, glad it's shaping up.

Some of the new XIII music released is amazing... mostly the chocobo song which is probably the best thing I've ever heard:

PS3 Version: 6 out of 10

Xbox Version: 3 out of 10

Final Fantasy fans will enjoy it, but I'll have to admit that I'm burned out on JRPGs.

JRPG's have become pretty lazy lately. There are like 5 new ones a month for DS and PSP.

Holy shit why is every area a straight line and why am I still in a tutorial for the most basic shit? Is there even exp in this game? I feel like I could have skipped literally every fight in the first 1.5 hours because all I got after every fight was some 5 star rating and a potion.

Also where in God's name is the victory music after battles? Did they really drop it?

Most areas are pretty linear. It's kind of the cost of the purdy environmental graphics I guess. There are some areas though that you can just look around and it's gorgeous, but would cost them soooo much money to make explorable super high-definition renders for a 40 hour game. Though once you get to Gran Pulse, it's probably the biggest explorable area I've seen in any game. Verrrrrrry non-linear.

As for star ratings, you don't have to worry too much about them during the main game, but they do affect what kind of drops you get, and you get achievements if you can 5-star all the monster hunts at the end, which is the hardest thing in the game to do really (I got em' all though!).

I don't remember hearing the victory music, though it may be sprinkled somewhere else... just not after battles sadly =( The battles do start pretty easy but get difficult soon enough. I didn't mind the tutorials, but things do get increasingly layered as you get more abilities and options.

(spoilers?)

Oh ho Merk just wait until you hear the chocobo music with the awful vocals and your childhood completely dies.

The sound design in this game makes for a completely dreadful experience when using headphones, too.

Well that little remix is kind of lame but the actual chocobo song that plays whenever you ride one is the best one in any series in my opinion.
