I didn't see this coming.

Initial observations:
- Apparently is going to be the final game in the series.
- Based off of the portable series of games.
- Will contain all Portable and Portable 2 songs allegedly. (Note: I don't think this will happen as this means Dreadnought's revival)
- Stated that song packs will happen from other releases in the series. (Note: Given the poor track record Neowiz has on DLC for DJ Max I'll believe it when I see it.)
- PS4 exclusive with a release date of January 2017.

The main thing to be determined is if this will handle the timing windows like DJ Max Online did, or will they use the Portable system?

A new DJ Max Respect trailer went up today so here's what was seen on it.

- 4b, 6b, and 6bfx gameplay modes are shown. 5b mode is not confirmed, but I would be shocked if they didn't have it.
- The interface looks more plain than past interfaces, but I personally like it.
- There is both a local two player mode and an online mode available.
- Mission Mode will be in this release. (I hope it isn't as ridiculous as Trilogy and Portable 2.)

Initial Impressions:
- Given that the portable series on the PSP ended in 2010 and Pentavision no longer exists, I was extremely skeptical on how good this would be. With that in mind I am shocked and overjoyed to say that this is the best game I have played in the series.
- 146 songs, consisting of almost everything from Portable 1 and Portable 2 in addition to 40 new songs.
- When applicable, Rocky Studio (the main developers of this release) used the old charts from the releases. However, as the PS4 has two thumbsticks, charts have been changed to take advantage of that which I actually like.
- Fever options are off, 5x, or auto 5x. (No 7x fever in this release currently and it is unknown if that will change.) Also, scrolling speeds stay the same regardless of fever level now. (This is a major departure from previous entries.)
- On a wireless dualshock the timing on this feels dead on and my first play of arcade mode resulted in 99.5% accuracy scores. A timing offset is available for TVs with latency, but I didn't have to use it on my TV. (In the interest of full disclosure, I will mention that according to Rtings my TV has 19.8 ms of input lag.)
- Most unlocks are showed in collection along with requirements which is a welcome change.
- The biggest downside, no bpm listing so be ready to change the speed at the start of the song or restart the song in arcade mode. (Edit: This has been fixed with a patch.)
- For the first time ever in DJ Max, there are no item based bonuses so this is now a game of skill. The sole downside is that this makes getting all free mode unlocks more difficult. I have mixed feelings on this, but for two player modes I definitely approve of this.
- Currently, free mode combo is hard to keep as once the combo is gone resetting the song or returning to song select won't preserve the combo which is a notable departure. (Edit: The new patch changes the behavior back to how it was for older releases, I'll check first before confirming.)
- Some unlocks are tied to missions which means casual players will have a harder time unlocking everything. Also, some are tied to online mode so a PS Plus subscription is required. Most unlocks though just require playing through the game and due to how many songs this release has, this doesn't feel like a grind-fest like Portable 3 was.
- Neowiz has stated plans for DLC based on other games in the series, but due to the failure to follow through with this on Technica Tune, I am skeptical of this happening until I see an official announcement and a release date.

Overall, this is a definite buy for classic DJ Max fans. For Technica fans though I know some won't be interested and I can understand why.

August 4th Edit:
- I almost forgot to mention that the timing window is universally the same for all songs now and not based on bpm like older songs. This makes playing some songs like Dream of You MUCH less painful now.
- There are claims that any song that can be unlocked via mission mode also can be unlocked via playcount or level. (This was how Portable 3 WAS supposed to work but Pentavision really screwed the pooch on that release.)
- I also forgot that the majority of songs on Portable 1 never had 5 button charts prior to this game so all of that is exclusive to this release.
- Based on what I've seen, I wouldn't be surprised if the order of DLC (if it happens) is Clazziquai, Black Square, Trilogy, Portable 3, then the Technika series.

(I know, yet another update post, LOL.)

DJMax Respect 1.03 was released today and added CnP (from the Korean version of Portable 1) to the songlist so only Dreadnought is missing now.

In addition to this, Neowiz has indeed followed through on their commitment of providing DLC and here's the current plans:

Trilogy DLC Pack: September 28th, 2017 release date
- 20 songs from DJMax Trilogy
- 1 new song
- Trilogy Gear Skin and UI Skin (The UI Skin has me excited as I like the UI for Trilogy a bit more than Respect.)

DLC from Metro Project (Clazziquai Edition, Black Square, and Technika 1) is slated for this Winter.

I will point out that there are several songs not listed in the Trilogy DLC Pack and while some songs like the Megatonic mixes won't be missed, I really hope that Space of Soul and Aurora Borealis do get a release at some point as they are amongst my favorite songs in the series. Also, with Stop appearing in Trilogy, it may be safe to say that the chart will probably feature the beginning of song bpm change as well. (The Black Square version had no bpm changes by comparison.)

The Trilogy DLC pack is out and in addition to the content I mentioned, it added twelve new missions as well and seven new trophies. I will mention that many of the new charts for the trilogy songs are a hybrid of the trilogy charts along with the usage of thumbsticks in a rather unique manner for some songs. I really hope that a US release will happen at some point for this now.
