Music!

Post by mexican ninja » Thu Feb 03, 2005 9:43 pm

Lets talk about music, any and all music. Music you hate, music you love. Bands you're listening to, albums you're waiting for etc.

I'll start off with some bands I've recently gotten into:
Modest Mouse
Beck
Daft Punk
The Chemical Brothers
Moby
Norma Jean
Underoath
The Postal Service
Franz Ferdinand

Also, was I the only one who liked American Idiot?

I didn't like the song, but I enjoyed the album.

However, 99% of the music I listen to is Maynard Ferguson. God I'm a loser.

The Postal Service... very good band. The lyrics and 8-bit-type music are pretty catchy.

As for American Idiot, I haven't heard much off of it. I like what I have heard, but I'm kinda lazy about checking out most new music... that and I'm less inclined to listen to a band who tends to wear more eye makeup than 95% of girls. See Good Charlotte and many other bands played quite often nowadays. Then again, it's Green Day, which is an ol' band I like, so it has that going for it.

Here're some bands I've been listening to a lot as of late:

The Postal Service
Rilo Kiley
Bright Eyes
Cursive
Q and Not U
Faraquet
Rival Schools
Red Animal War
GO!GO!7188
Asian Kung-Fu Generation
Tokyo Jihen
Orange Range
Beat Crusaders (or what I can find! GAAAH!)
Bennie K
Hitomi

GO!GO!7188 and down being music of the Japanese variety. Music I enjoy hearing quite a bit. Music I need more of despite having over 3 days worth to play straight. >_>

Hmm, I'll have to check pretty much all of those guys out. I've heard a lil' of GO!GO!7188 and Asian Kung-Fu Generation before, but it's been a while, and my tastes often change. I'll have to check out The Postal Service as well, they sound interesting.

You might wanna check out Polysics, you might like 'em.

If that's the case, then Good Charlotte is copying Green Day, not the other way around. Green Day has had pretty much the same sound ever since I started listening to them, about mid 90's. I havn't heard the whole album (American Idiot), but I liked what I heard. There's a deeper meaning behind their songs now.

As for bands I have a fetish for at the moment:

Nine Inch Nails (Always have, always will)
Lacuna Coil
Orgy
Shadows Fall
A Perfect Circle
Atreyu
Nightwish
Stabbing Westward
Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill's composer. The game, not the shitty song. =P)
X Japan

I like a lot of obscure, random things too. Lots of instrumental, hell, I even listen to Jazz and Blues every now and then.

Things I don't like:

Most punk music
'emo' or indy stuff. Sorry, but it REALLY grates on my nerves. How can I not like it, you may ask, since it seems 90% of the forum likes it. Well, how can you not like Heavy Metal? I like heavy metal. I rest my case. It's all a matter of preference, and to be completely honest, emo generally has some really boring guitar, and since I'm a guitar player, that's a big thing I look for in my music. Not always, but usually.

Ska
Incubus
Limp Bizkit (someone shoot Fred Durst please. All he does is try to insult people with more talent than him.)
Rap and 'R&B'.

Another thing I don't like?
MTV.

I have a huge variety in tastes. But I usually find myself listening to techno... probably because techno gets infulenced by every single other kind of music out there.

The only 2 kinds of music I don't like are really tangy generic Country and Gangsta' Rap.

There are only a few individual artist I really enjoy. Usually, I just like individual songs. But here are a few of my favorite artists.

The Crystal Method.
Fatboy Slim.
Groove Armada.
Deee-lite.
The Ataris.
Guitar Vader.
U2.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Buddy Guy.
B. B. King.

I'm also a big fan of Micheal Jackson era 1982. But as we all know, 80's Micheal is dead... and he's not coming back. And I am in no way a fan of this... thing... that replaced him.

I donno, there are LOTS of artist I like, there are just the ones I could think of off the top of my head.

I donno, there are just the ones from the top of my head...

I do!

I'm trying to get some gigs in Broadripple. But that'll have to wait till I get my Mixer back from the shop... Should be in about a week.

Trouble is... the only things people want to listen to in Indianapolis is stupid rap shit and hip hop.

No room for DJ Grubb and the Electric Luau!

But either way, if you know of a place that might like a DJ who'll work just for the experince and tips, let me know.

I feel your pain...it's the same way here. I've been trying to start a band, but it seems very bleak, and pointless, when theres no where to play.
I swear, these people don't know what a live act is, unless it's got a black man with a Mic rapping to it over horribly done sampled music.
Oddly, we seem to be getting a rather large punk following here...I'm sincerely hoping it spirals off into a good rock scene. Supposedly, we've got some good Metal bands here, but there's just no where for them to play, and the punk shows are like "whine, you're no emo, whine!" so, all the good concert places ignore them.
