The biggest, blackest CAT5 cable.

If you are no longer connected to the internet, you need to apply more wax to your modem: it'll make it go faster.
If you find this funny, you're a nerd.
If neither of the above apply, you are normal. Congratulations.

How does everyone feel about Cat5 cables that aren't black? Do you all use specific-colored cables for specific tasks? For example, some people use orange Cat5 for the uplink port, blue cables for trunk connections, black cables for the host-to-switch connection, etc.

I personally don't give a darn because I usually just want to get shit working and don't care about the aesthetics but I suppose if I was trying to *look* organized I'd use color-coded cables.

This season's hottest CAT5 cable is vermillion red. It's VERY important to accessorize.

Pantone color of the year is Marsala. Stores can't keep those cables in stock!

We did try to color code our cables at the switch here...but I don't think anyone cares anymore at this point.

Blue is general purpose patches such as end-user workstations, low-importance servers, etc.
White is special purpose but non-critical patches. Mostly things like patches to telephony end-devices.
Yellow is servers and other important patches. Some people use this for crossover wired cables, but that's falling out of favor now that everything supports Auto-MDIX.
Red is interswitch links and uplinks or very important servers. Basically something that demands additional attention.
Orange is "don't touch this unless you know what you're doing" stuff - very important servers, critical edge links ("The Internet"), etc. Some people also used this for crossover wiring, but again Auto-MDIX has made that usage mostly obsolete.

Many organizations have other policies. Purple is popularly used for PoE or cameras. Green is somewhat popular to call attention to 10GBASE-T carrying Cat6A cable in environments where it is not otherwise prevalent.

I find most organizations have trouble strictly adhering to their policies, including myself.

Yeah it's of those things you have to strictly adhere to from day 1 otherwise there's no point in doing it since, given enough time, your color-coding is going to get all fucked up with exceptions. If someone is in desperate need of a patch cable that should be red and all you have are black cables because your company forgot to order more red cables, you're going to give them what you have on hand.

"Sorry sir, we're out of red cables I can't run that patch for you"
*gets fired*
