If your time horizon is long and liquidity needs low, there's nothing to worry about here. If anything, now's the time to look at investing more: Wall Street is on sale.

If your time horizon is short and liquidity needs high, well, then what were you doing being so exposed to equities?

But.... But stocks only go UP!!!

We'll be fine, we're just going through some pre-earnings profit taking and your standard market volatility. At worst stocks will trade flat over the next year. Earnings thus far have been good, unemployment remains low and is decreasing, and the fed is going to very likely be raising rates next year which indicates that the ol' economy is chugging along.

The year isn't officially over but it looks like I will be up about $700 this year from my initial investment of $13,000 for a gain of ~5.38% -- I'm not sure what my gains-to-risk ratio is or how I should go about calculating that but the majority of my money is in fixed income bond/bank note type shit. This money is afterall my savings for a house down payment so I have to think short-term.

The S&P 500 did a fuckload better than my portfolio and had a gain of about 12.5% this year. If you're in the market for the long haul peeps then buy an index fund, SPY is a ETF that let's you get exposed to the S&P 500 for relatively cheap.

God damn, oil is cheap as fuck. If I had a good chunk of change to put into the market for the long-haul I'd be mighty tempted to get into oil now while it's cheap and inevitably going to rebound.

The majority (all?) of oil trading, like most commodities markets, is not the "buy and hold" type deal you have with equities or bonds. It's mostly futures, and those have a definite maturity date. You can go fairly long on that date, but the market tends to price anticipated fluctuations ("inevitably going to rebound") into those contracts since they're bought/sold separately from near-term contracts. If you look at e.g. 2 year oil futures, they're still trading a fair bit higher than near term stuff.

I have a couple of Robinhood invites for anyone who is interested. $0 commissions? Yes please. https://www.robinhood.com/

I plunked $100 down and bought some shares of CIM (a REIT) and it looks like everything went through OK. If you don't have a lot of money but want to dick around in the market then Robinhood is perfect for you thanks to no commissions.

Finally got around to setting this up... but it's iOS only. Bummer. I can't imagine why it isn't available on the web. Maybe they'll open it up eventually.

Ahhhh, yeah, shit sorry! No idea why they haven't made an Android app or set up a web front-end. Maybe it has something to do with keeping their costs as low as possible?
