The point is, not that "dumb people" are voting one way, but their priorities are somewhere else. For example, many people choose not to pursue college degrees because they hate school, they want to be a firefighter, or are perfectly content with a simplistic minimal lifestyle.

Even if it's true that "republicans are dumb," would that really matter? I mean how fair would it be if we only considered votes or opinions from people with higher IQs? That would collapse the idea of democracy: a system that allows everyone an equal say no matter how smart or dumb, no matter how rich or poor.

Ninety-five percent of Americans are stupidly ignorant when it comes to politics anyway, college degree or not.

* I am still just really mad about online poker. Over the weekend I went to Fort Wayne and, no joke, two charity casinos had opened up within two miles of each other where I could plop down $200 and get sucked out on by the plethora of call stations that make up the horrible shitshow of live $1/$2 Hold 'em. There is no excuse as to why the government should not allow me to play poker on the internet like I could for a decade before 2011 since they clearly do not give a fuck about my well-being or preventing me from problem gambler or whatever. I read articles everyday about new casinos opening up, new laws allowing sports betting in states like New Jersey, and removing the arbitrary betting limits in states like Colorado - it pisses me off that this blatant hypocrisy is harming my quality of life.

The difference is due to the social security tax holiday ending. Rates are now back to where they were a few years ago, so you're paying what you would have in social security back in e.g. 2008.

In theory, this money is 100% directed to social security, so none of it is used to "kill brown people". Your actual federal income tax didn't go up (unless you make more than ~$450,000/yr...).

In practice, Congress learned long ago that they can "borrow" from social security to essentially convert that revenue stream into something usable for other purposes, so that may not be 100% true, but EVENTUALLY that money will go to old people in the US.

It's normal for paychecks to change a little bit when the year rolls over. All sorts of tax changes often happen then.

Also, keep in mind that your employer has to pay the same amount in social security that you do. Of course, in the long term, if this weren't the case, you could probably negotiate a comparable raise (money is generally fungible like that), but it's very much hidden from you. Note that the employer half of social security never received this tax holiday, so your employer has been paying that extra $25 this whole time.

If you really want to see how much social security and medicare cost, look up what SE tax is currently set to. That's basically the "full cost" equivalent of the program.
