Grammar Problem

Post by Fluffyumpkins » Tue Dec 21, 2010 12:16 pm

IndyDDR is home to some of the best writers in the universe. I need to tap the collective intelligence of this group to solve a problem that’s bugging me.

This sentence:

"I will confirm Cloud Services availability."

*Cloud Services is the name of a group, sort of like IndyDDR.

Would it be Cloud Services' or Cloud Services's? Generally a plural possessive noun would simply add an ' after the s. In this case, Cloud Services is a singular group. You wouldn't say, "IndyDDR are retarded" because it is not plural, right? Singular nouns would take the 's form (Indianapolis's teachers named Riot should know the answer to this problem.)

Cloud Services's looks retarded, but is it correct?

Simply reword it as "I will confirm the availability of Cloud Services."

Problem solved.

I would do what Joe said or do "Cloud Services' availability."

The rule I have always heard is that "s'" is only for plurals. For nouns that just happen to end with an "s", I was always told that "...s's" is proper. So that would be "Could Services's availability."

Then again, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe both are acceptable. Maybe it varies with who's style you adopt (APA, Chicago, MLA, AP, etc.). YMMV. I doubt anyone will really care. I see both with relatively equal frequency.

I'm with Joe, though, just make it a non-issue if possible.

If neither of the above apply, you are normal. Congratulations.

I would say it's honestly not that big of a deal and it's pretty much accepted either way because there are various rules/styles in which both are correct. As long as you're consistent you're probably fine.

Again, I'd agree with Joe and restructure the sentence so its not an issue, I do this all the time!

But, in my opinion, it's Cloud Services' and my reasoning is that if you were to speak the phrase, "...Cloud Services availability" it would sound less retarded than "...Cloud Serviceses availabilty"

But really it doesn't matter as has been iterated already a few times in this threaduuuuu~~~
