Building Computer >_<

Any tips? I've never done this before.

I did make sure that the motherboard supports DDR2 800 RAM. And the graphics card is "PCI Express 2.0 x16", and it looks like the motherboard has "2 x PCI-E x16 2.0 Slot (CFX x8)" so I think I'm good.

I'm thinking windows 7 x64 sounds good although I might stick with xp until I get an SSD.

I've already got a hard drive, dvd drive, and one monitor. This is what I'm thinking of getting:

XFX GeForce 9600 GT $89.99

Antec earthwatts 500W Power Supply $69.99

3x 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 $92.97 (for 3)

Rosewill Computer Case $19.99

Acer 23" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor Built-in Speakers $149.99

CPU/Motherboard combo (dual core 3.1 GHz)
$169.98

Grand Total: $592.91

Yikes. In the past I've spent $2000 on dell desktops, so this sounds amazing.

Looks like a pretty solid mid-range system.
The case, though, is only compatible with MicroATX, but the board you have picked out is full ATX. Might wanna go with something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6811147095
I know it costs a little more and doesn't have free shipping, though. Figured you wanted to try to keep the front USB ports & have a case that isn't completely ugly.

Joe beat me to mentioning that the case picked won't work for your motherboard, but aside from that those are pretty good specs. I haven't seen a justified enough speed increase when it comes to going 64 bit, albeit it is the only way to go if you wish to have more than 3 gigs of ram.

As for videocard, I saw a 9800GT for the same price at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814187091 but I can understand if you go for XFX since they are high quality.

I would definitely bump up the 9600 to a 9800 at least, 9600s just don't get the job done that well. And I would switch from AMD to an Intel Core2Duo like an e8400, they are really nice. It'll be a bit more expensive but will be better imooooooo

And go for EVGA with your graphics card they are the best and have the best customer support for sure.

Nice muscle!

good call on the microATX, that would have been bad ^_^

The Intel e8400 looks like $100 more, so it's a maybe..

If I bump up my graphics card I think I'll have to bump up my power supply as well which would be $40 more. That might be a good idea anyway though

Definitely don't skimp out on the power supply, that's one of the most important parts. If that goes bad then it could blow up all the rest of your parts. I would go with one of these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817341001

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817139004

Corsair makes great PSUs. And I would definitely go with a 9800gtx for graphics at least. As for the processor, if you're not willing to bump it up that's fine but you get what ya pay for =) AMD can't really compete with Intel unless it's at the mid to high end quad cores. But AMD is certainly cheaper if that's the priority.

Also RAM is cheap and good these days, go for 4gb and it's cheaper -

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231209

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820231122

There are a lot of really good 4gb RAM sets.

http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp should be able to help on seeing how much power will be needed. 500 should be good though.
