Oh, and later I picked up a (used) copy of Elite Beat Agents for $12.99; supposedly, it's for my kids (heh, heh).

Also, read this:

Eh I went in and looked at all the Samsungs, Toshibas, Sonys, everything side by side. The Sony was the obvious best choice. Everything else was really dark and grainy comparatively. The contrast ratio is really high and the screen is really really bright and clear, very high quality. Most of the other "sale" tv's were cheap because their contrast ratio was the lower of the bunch and they just didn't look as good. Definitely happy with it, was the way to go.

Well obviously they adjust settings to better the looks of Sonys and Samsungs, at least the brightness and all that crap. But the picture is just much sharper in general. Samsungs are good too, but this TV is sexy and Little Big Planet looked pretty amazing on it so I'm sold.

Using the stated contrast ratio to compare different brands is pointless, as each manufacturer makes their own standard for their tests. Also, if they weren't running the same demo signal, there's no way to realistically compare them, as one signal could very easily be far better than the other.

Anyway, the Sony's aren't horrible or anything, they're just really nothing special compared to the competition, and the fact that Sony still up charges for the Sony Tax makes them rather meh.

Well I realize all contrast ratio scales are different, but you can tell differences just looking closely between each TV, especially looking closely at how well text's corners are rendered. Yeah Sony is the most expensive, but it looked the best, looks amazing when I brought it home, and I like the PSP-style menu bars it has and everything so I'm happy with it. Everywhere I looked and read online mostly put them as the winner as well. Me likey.

Now I need to get a PS3 =/

I didn't even see the floor model of mine, I just saw $388 and 32" LCD Samsung 720p and I was like you are coming home, so I got it and I love it :)

it was mostly just the name Samsung that had me sold, I have not had a bad Samsung LCD experience yet

Thank you, Potter. That comment is gold.

LOL. I'd be surprised if most "big box" stores do any more than take them out of the box and plug them in. And most "factory settings" seem to subscribe to the "make this TV as bright as the sun" school of thought.

All the major brands are pretty good at this point. Some are better than others at particular things, so it really comes down to application and personal preference on which is the "best" for you.

I know absolutely nothing about TVs but this thread is awesome!

So any good deals out there that aren't TV related? I could use another video card, I guess!
