Anybody using Google's new Chrome browser?

Post by Riot » Wed Sep 03, 2008 12:10 am

http://www.google.com/chrome

Very fast, pretty sleek. Not many extensions or anything yet, but I don't use any of those anyways. Uses less memory than Firefox and so far I've noticed it's going a lot faster. I like it a lot so far.

Yes, I am using it. I like it a lot - not just because it's faster, but because they made some very smart design decisions. My two favorite are:

1) They've maximized the amount of available screen space you can use. There's the address bar and the tabs at the top, and that's freaking it. Hey, that's a big reason I like ITG's interface better than DDR ;)

2) When you open a new tab/window, it pops up your bookmarks and history right there instead of a useless blank page.

The one process per tab idea is neat, but it can be annoying because I use the task manager process list for a lot of things and having 5+ "chrome.exe" processes in there is a little wierd.

I'm interested in all this talk about chrome making it easier to use desktop apps in a browser, but I haven't heard anything substantial about that yet. Just hype.

Some people are bitching over the EULA, which says something to the effect that google gets certain rights over whatever you create using Chrome.

I don't care because I don't create anything in a web browser o.O

Yah the biggest thing I noticed is how much freaking room you get to browse now. It made my monitor seem even bigger than it already was! Also the most popular history on the new tab is ingenious. I want to know if I can make more show up, as I only visit the same sites anyways.

Only thing I don't like is I can't use the center mouse scrolly wheel thing to zoom around on the page. =(

Hah I use it all the time =D

Oh and I read something about Chrome auto-opening exe files or something, that might be bad. Not sure about it though.

Well I actually am using it now in place of Firefox.

I'm waiting for purists/elitists to jump this thread.

Can I use it from a portable USB drive? If not, it can suck both of my balls and I'll stick with firefox for my work browsing :p

Just to clarify this, the EULA basically says that you grant the right to Google to use, any way it sees fit, ANYTHING that you own the rights to that you post, write, etc. with absolutely NO recompensation to you. They can use it to make money, in an ad, as their own creation, etc.
No thanks, I'll keep what I make up.

Not that I have any love for Google's "we own your soul" approach to these sorts of things, but they apparently have since modified the EULA so that those clauses are no longer included and made the change retroactive to previous versions.

Of course, if you've ever uploaded anything to Youtube or similar social networking sites, read their EULA some time...
A normality test:
+++ATH
If you are no longer connected to the internet, you need to apply more wax to your modem: it'll make it go faster.
If you find this funny, you're a nerd.
If neither of the above apply, you are normal. Congratulations.
