You can still IRC or simply chat over a server via ssh, but it's unconventional as hell.

Yeah my desktop at home isn't much better except it has shortcuts to games and shit instead of spreadsheets. I like to keep things simple and functional instead of pretty and shiny.

I also own a flip phone and am adamant in not owning a smartphone.

Functionality can also be pretty. I have things set up to be very convenient for myself. I hate desktop clutter, although my laptop is full of icons right now, but that's okay because it's just a slave for my rig to get my router's signal for the time being.
